SAP Landscape Management 3.0, Enterprise Edition

Allowing Multiple Instances to Run on One Host at a Time

You assign hosts to instances so that multiple instances can run on one host at a time.

Prerequisites

  • The host and the instance are in the same pool.

  • The host is assigned to the instance, so that instances with the same mount point can only run together if all the attributes of the mount point configuration (export path, mount options, storage type, FS/SRID type, partner ID) are the same.

  • The host is active so that the instances can be started on it.

  • SAP Host Agent on the host is running.

  • A host is selected to ensure the following:

    • Only instances with different instance numbers can run on the host.

    • Multiple databases cannot run on the host. However, multiple databases can run on the same host if they have the same virtual host name.

    • Instances that do not have the same mount point can run together on the host.

  • The instance requirements fit with the host requirements in terms of SAPS and memory. The SAPS and memory requirements of the instance are less than or equal to that of the host. This requirement is verified only if the Enabled option in the Host Check field is selected in the Instances screen.

  • The auto selector only assigns a host if all the associated networks of the instance are also associated to the host.

  • Required operating system (OS) types, OS version, CPU type, and address space of the host and the instance are matching.

  • Instances that share the same virtual host names can only run on the same hosts.

For instance, consider the following scenario:

    Scenario 1:

Instances I1 and I2 are not running and have the same virtual host name VH1.

The auto selector assigns the same host for example H1, to both the instances I1 and I2.

    Scenario 2:

Instances I1 is running on host H1 and H2 is not running. Both the instances have the same virtual host name VH1.

The auto selector assigns the host H1 to the instance I2.
