Instance Operations
This section provides information for performing operations and mass operations on instances.
General Prerequisites for Instance Operations
Before you perform operations on instances, ensure that the general prerequisites are
met.
Preparing Systems and Instances
When you prepare instances, you bind virtual host names of an
instance or a set of instances to network interfaces, and you mount remote memory locations
to the local file system. For SAP instances, you register and start the instance agents. For
database instances, you attach the database instance to the host and start the database
listener.
Starting Including Preparing Systems and Instances
You bind virtual host names of an instance to network interfaces, you mount remote
memory locations to the local file system, and then you start an instance.
Starting Systems and Instances
You start an instance or a set of instances. When you start an SAP system, you start the
logical database, one or more application server instances (ABAP and/or Java), central
services (such as a message server and enqueue server), and optional components (such as
TREX and liveCache).
Restarting Systems and Instances
You restart an instance or a set of instances for example, after a power
failure.
Stopping Systems and Instances
You can stop an instance or a set of instances. When you stop an SAP system, you stop
the logical database, one or more application server instances (ABAP and/or Java), central
services (such as a message server and enqueue server), and optional components (such as
TREX and liveCache).
Stopping and Unpreparing Systems and Instances
You can stop an instance, unmount remote memory locations from the local file system,
and unbind virtual host names from the network interfaces.
Unpreparing Systems and Instances
You unmount remote memory locations from the local file system and unbind virtual host
names from the network interfaces. For SAP instances, you stop and deregister the instance
agent. For database instances, your detach the database and stop the database
listeners.
Relocating Not Running Systems and Instances
You relocate an instance or a set of instances from one host to another, either
physically, or virtually in either direction. The operation retains the status of the
instances. Not running instances are unprepared and prepared.
Relocating Running Systems and Instances
You relocate an instance or a set of instances from one host to another, either
physically, or virtually in either direction. The operation retains the status of the
instances. Running instances are stopped, unprepared, prepared, and started.
Using Graceful Shutdown
The graceful shutdown allows an ABAP application server instance to be stopped in the
timeout specified and all logged users to be informed for shutdown.
Restarting the AS Java Instance of an AS ABAP/Java System
You restart the Java instance of your SAP NetWeaver dual-stack (ABAP + Java)
system in a single or in a mass operation.
Restarting and Reregistering an Instance Agent
You restart and reregister an instance agent without unmounting/mounting remote memory
locations and without unbinding/binding the virtual host name in a single or in a mass
operation.
Registering and Starting an Instance Agent
You register and start an instance agent in a single or in a mass operation.
Executing Operations on Instances with an SAP Solution Manager System Assigned to Them
You perform operations on systems that have an SAP Solution Manager system assigned to
them.
Executing Operations on Instances with a Focused Run System Assigned to Them
You perform operations on systems that have a Focused Run system assigned to
them.
