Create an SAP Data Services Task

Creating and executing an SAP Data Services task helps execute an SAP Data Services job. The execution of SAP Data Services job helps users to integrate, transform, and improve the data quality.

Prerequisites

  • You have created a project.
  • You have created and activated at least one destination in the same project in which you are creating the SAP data services task.
  • The destination has a connection (connection type: SAP Data Services) to an SAP Vora system (system type: SAP VORA).

Context

In SAP Data Services, the unit of execution is called jobs. Executing an SAP Data Services job in SAP Data Hub helps in:
  • Data ingestion into a Hadoop cluster for further processing (natively in a Hadoop cluster).
  • Moving data out of SAP Data Hub after processing.

Procedure

  1. Start the SAP Data Hub cockpit in a Web browser.
  2. In the System Status section, choose the Modeling tile.
The cockpit opens the SAP Data Hub Modeling tool in a new tab in the same browser window.
  3. Create task.
    1. In the navigation pane, right-click the project within which you want to create the task and choose Start of the navigation pathNew Next navigation step TaskEnd of the navigation path.
    2. In the Create Task dialog box, provide a name for the task.
    3. In the Type dropdown list, select SAP Data Services.
    4. Choose Create.
The tool opens a new editor where you can define your task.
  4. Define the task.
    1. In the Destination value help list, select the required destination.
The tool populates the value help list with destinations that have connections to an SAP Vora system. The connection type is, SAP Data Services.
    2. In the Description text field, provide a description for the task.
    3. In the SAP Data Services Job value help list, browse the required SAP data services job.
The tool displays the global variables and the substitution parameters, if any, which are associated with the job.
    4. In the Job Server dropdown list, select the required job server that the tool must use to execute the job.
    5. In the System Configuration dropdown list, select the required system configuration that the tool must use for running the job.
  5. (Optional) Edit global variables.
If you want to edit the default values of the global variables associated with the job,
    1. In the Global Variables section, select the required global variable.
    2. In the Value text field, choose and provide the required value.
    3. If you want to define a new global variable for the SAP Data Services job, in the Global Variables section, choose +.
  6. (Optional) Edit substitution parameters.
If you want to edit the default values of the substitution parameters associated with the job,
    1. In the Substitution Parameter section, use the Name field select or enter the name of the substitution parameter.
    2. In the Value text field, choose and provide the required parameter value.
    3. If you want to define a new substitution parameter for the SAP Data Services job, in the Substitution Parameter section, choose + (Add).
  7. (Optional) Open the SAP data services job in the SAP data services system.

You can open the selected SAP data services job in SAP data services system to view the data services job. If you want to open the data services job in the system in which it was created, then

    1. In the editor after selecting the data services job, choose (Navigate to).
The tool opens the log on screen of SAP data services system in a new tab.
    2. Enter the User Name and Password.
    3. Choose Log On.
You can now view the SAP data services job in the system in which it was created.
  8. Save changes.
In the global toolbar, choose Save to save the task.
  9. Activate the task.
After creating a task object, activate the task. Activation is necessary to convert the design-time object to its equivalent runtime object in the database.
    1. In the global toolbar, choose (Activate) to activate the task.
  10. (Optional) Execute the task.
After creating and activating a task, you can directly execute the task for an immediate execution.
    1. In the global toolbar, choose (Execute) to execute the task.
The tool opens a new editor, where you can monitor the status of the task execution. You can also monitor the status of these task executions in the SAP Data Hub cockpit (monitoring dashboard).
