Definition

The best proposal is the proposal that the system considers to be the most suitable translation for a specific source text with respect to the domain of the object, and the space available in the translation line. In the short text editor , the best proposal is displayed in blue beneath the translation line. You can copy it into the translation line by double-clicking it.

Note

A system standard , application standard , or abbreviation can be the best proposal for a source text. Exceptions are never the best proposal.

Determining the Best Proposal

The system determines which proposal is the best proposal using the following three criteria:

  1. Domain of the object

If an application standard exists in the proposal pool for the domain of the object to be translated, the application standard is the best proposal.

If no application standard exists in the proposal pool for the domain, the system standard is the best proposal.

  2. Space available in the translation line

If sufficient space is available in the translation line for the full text of the system standard or application standard that is the best proposal, then this full text is the best proposal.

If there is insufficient space for the full translation, the longest abbreviation that fits into the translation line is the best proposal.

For more information on abbreviations, see Abbreviation and Creating Abbreviations and Full Translations .

  3. Quality status of available proposals

If more than one system standard or application standard exists for a source text, the best proposal is the proposal that satisfies the above criteria and has the highest quality status.

For more information, see Quality Status and Creating Multiple System / Application Standards .

Example

The proposal pool contains several proposals for the German source text Auftragsnr. . The table in the graphic indicates which proposal is the best proposal, depending on the domain of the object currently being translated and the space available in the translation line.

Determining the Best Proposal

Short Text Editor

If a best proposal exists for a source text line, the system displays it in blue beneath the translation line. You can copy it into the translation line by double-clicking it. When you save, the translation status translated is assigned to the short text line.

You can use the Distribute Proposals function to insert best proposals into all of the translation lines in a short text object. For more information, see Distributing Proposals .

In the following situations, the system does not display a best proposal for source text lines:

  • No proposals exist in the proposal pool for this source text.

  • Proposals exist for the source text, but they are:

    • Application standards for domains to which the object to be translated does not belong

    • Exceptions

    • Translations that do not fit into the space available in the translation line. In this case, you must create an abbreviation . For more information, see Creating Abbreviations and Full Translations .

Automatic Distribution

If evaluations are performed with automatic distribution in your system, the system inserts best proposals into translation lines during the evaluation. This enables you to reduce the manual translation workload. For more information on how to use automatic distribution, and the conditions for doing so, see Automatic Distribution .
