Editing Specifications

Prerequisites

  • Before you can edit specifications, they must first have been created or imported in the SAP system. To be able to assign values to specifications, you must have also manually created or imported phrases and sources (see Phrase Editing and Source Management).

  • Materials that are to be assigned to specifications must have been previously created in the Material Master.

  • You must have authorization to display and edit specifications.

  1. Specifications are edited from a central interface called the Specification Workbench. On the initial screen, you have the following options:

    • You can enter different search criteria and start a specification search. If the required specification does not exist in the SAP system, you can create it.

      Note Note

You can define additional search functions as user exits in Customizing for Basic Data and Tools.

      End of the note.
    • In the navigation area of the specification workbench, you can choose a specification that you added previously.

If you want to edit specifications with Engineering Change Management, you must enter a change number in the specification workbench.

  2. The results of the search are displayed in a hit list where you can edit existing specifications and create new ones. For example, you can use the Where-Used List to display specifications which contain specifications from the hit list or use them as a reference. You can save the set of hits in the hit list and reload them when required.

  3. Whether you are creating a specification from the initial screen or the hit list, the first step is to enter the specification header data. This involves entering the Specification Type among other entries.

You can copy an existing specification as a template. You can copy data from another specification over to an existing specification.

  4. You use identifiers to uniquely describe a specification (see Identification).

To each identifier you can assign a Regulatory List, which you edit in Regulatory List Management. You can also specify a Usage for each identifier and thus control the rating and validity area for which the identifier is permitted (see Editing Usages).

  5. You can specify reference specifications (References) depending on specification type. A reference transfers its value assignments to the referencing specification, which you can overwrite if necessary. You can also use Inheritance to transfer data from a source specification to target specifications. The Inheritance Template controls which data are transferred.

  6. You can assign multiple materials to a specification depending on specification type.

  7. In the specification header data, you can define the Specification Status and Restrictions for header data editing.

  8. The Property Tree offers a structured display of all the value assignment types that you can edit in the value assignment of specifications (see Value Assignment). From the property tree, you can copy individual value assignment data records between specifications.

  9. Characteristic values are used to store the individual data and information for specifications in the value assignment (see Editing Characteristic Values).

In all value assignment types, you can edit the Assessment, specify a Source (see Source Management), enter any User-Defined Texts and Documentsand use the Usage to control the rating and validity area for which the value assignment is permitted (see Editing Usages).

For specifications that consist of multiple components, you can also specify Compositions and Listings in corresponding value assignment types.

Note Note

In Customizing for Basic Data and Tools, you can adjust the images for the specification search and the tab pages for editing specification header data and value assignment types to your requirements, you can define your own images and tab pages and, for example, define which tab pages are offered to you depending on the specification type of the specification to be edited. You can also define which objects are provided to you in the specification workbench.

This documentation only describes the SAP standard system. If you hide or change fields, screens, or functions in the SAP standard system using Customizing, this can lead to processes, functions, and procedures described in this documentation no longer exactly representing the situation in your system.

End of the note.

Result

From the hit list, you can also

  • Start the export for specifications (see

Export: Process)

In the specification information system you can call up specification management data in a targeted manner. Different output variants area available for display (see Search and Data Output in the Specification Information System).
