You can define the cause and effect relationships between objectives. A cause objective is one that impacts the current objective. An effect objective is one that is impacted by the current objective. By default, a Cause & Effect subtab appears in the Strategy component. Initially, there are no cause and effect relationships set up. You can define the cause and effect relationships between objectives.

For each objective, specify the objectives that impact this objective and the objectives that are impacted by this objective.

Prerequisites

Someone with Create/Edit Contexts permissions has created a context. For more information, see Context Development.

Someone with Create/Edit Objectives permissions has created perspectives and objectives. For more information, see Perspective and Objective Library Development.

You are an administrator or a user assigned to an application group with Create/Edit Strategy permissions. If Strategy is unavailable to you, it means you do not have the correct permissions.

You have selected the Display Cause and Effect option on the Set Strategy Defaults screen of the Strategy section.

Features

You can do the following to implement a Cause and Effect diagram in the Strategy component:

  • Select a context from the Context drop-down list to work with causes and effects for this context.

  • Select an objective whose relationships you want to define. Then specify the objectives that impact the selected objective (the causes) by clicking Edit next to the Causes: <objective name> list. Specify the objectives that are impacted by the selected objective (the effects) by clicking Edit next to the Effects: <objective name> list.

The Objectives list shows all the objectives selected for this context. If different objectives were assigned to the strategy versus the scorecard during objective selection, then this list shows only the objectives picked for the strategy.

For information about selecting objectives for the context, see Objective Selection.

When a user selects an objective in the Cause & Effect subtab and clicks Causes or Effects, the user sees the causes or effects for that objective.

  • Add, remove, or change the cause relationships and effect relationships for the selected objective. When an objective is selected, the Causes and Effects list boxes appear with Edit links, which you can use to select and deselect objectives.

  • Review the causes and effects assigned to an objective by clicking on the objective. The Causes list shows you the objectives that impact the selected objective. The Effects list shows the objectives that are impacted by the selected objective. If the Causes or Effects box is empty, it means you have not defined any relationships.

Note Note

If you want to remove the Causes and Effects subtab from the Strategy component, use the options on the Set Strategy Defaults page in the Strategy section. For more information, see Strategy Defaults. If you are displaying a Cause & Effect subtab with defined relationships, and you remove the subtab, and then you add it back at a later time, the previously defined causes and effects are re-implemented in the Cause & Effect tab. You can modify the relationships by setting new causes and effects.

End of the note.

Activities

To set up a Cause and Effect diagram, choose Set Causes and Effects from the Strategy component.
