Translation Status: Examples

The following graphic contains five examples of source text/target text combinations and their respective translation statuses. This topic explains how to proceed in each individual situation.

Example 1

In this example, the translation line for the source text Beenden is empty. The line therefore has status new, and the color displayed in the status bar is red. No proposal is displayed beneath the translation line. This means that there is no best proposal for this source text.

Enter a translation, choose Save, and use the icon in the status bar to branch to the proposal pool. Create your translation as a proposal.

You have the following options when you create a proposal:

If you think your translation is valid for all domains in the system, create a system standard .
If you think your translation is only valid in the domain of the object you are currently translating, create an application standard . The object in this example is a Basis object (BC). This means you can create an application standard for the domain BC.
If you think your translation is only correct in this particular context and you want to prevent it from being used in the entire system or domain, create an exception .
If the translation line is too short for the full translation, enter an abbreviation in the translation line, save it, and then branch to the proposal pool. If no full text exists for the abbreviation, create one as a system standard or application standard. The full text and abbreviation do not need to have the same quality status. The quality status of an abbreviation is determined by its quality as an abbreviation of the full text to which it belongs. If you think the abbreviation is a standard abbreviation of its full text, assign quality status A to it. If the source text needs translating again in the future, the full text can also be displayed as the best proposal, providing that there is enough space in the translation line. In this example, you are advised to enter Exit in the translation line and to create this translation as a system standard, so that all translations of the source text Beenden are consistent throughout the entire system.

Example 2

In this example, the translation line for the source text Transportauftrag contains the translation Transport Request. However, there is no valid proposal (or suitable exception) in the proposal pool, as no best proposal is displayed in blue beneath the translation line. The line therefore has status modified, and the color displayed in the status bar is yellow.

If you are satisfied with the translation in the translation line, branch to the proposal pool to create it as a proposal. See the options above for creating a proposal.
If you are not satisfied with the translation in the translation line, correct it, choose Save, and then branch to the proposal pool to create it as a proposal.

In this example, you are advised to accept Transport Request as the correct translation, and create it as an application standard for the domain BC because other domains may need different translations. The correct translation in Logistics, for example, is Transfer Order.

Example 3

In this example, the translation line for the source text Auftrag contains the translationRequest. However, there is no valid proposal (or suitable exception) in the proposal pool, as the best proposal displayed under the translation line is Order. The line therefore has status modified, and the color displayed in the status bar is yellow.

You have the following options:

If you think the best proposal is correct and want to use it as your translation, double-click it to copy it to the translation line. Then choose Save.
If you prefer the translation, branch to the proposal pool to create it as a proposal. The translation then matches an entry in the proposal pool. You have the following options:
- Create the translation as a system standard. If you want the translation Order to be a system standard too, assign quality status X to both translations. This makes it very unlikely that the terms will be distributed automatically. If you delete the old system standard Order, all of the lines in which Order has been entered as the translation will be displayed as modified, because the old translation no longer matches an entry in the proposal pool. This also applies to translations entered by other translators.
- Create an application standard. The translation Request then overrides the system standard Order throughout the domain BC. Request is then displayed as the best proposal in all objects that belong to the domain BC and include the source text Auftrag. Order is still displayed as the best proposal in objects assigned to other domains.
- Create an exception. This ensures that the translation matches an entry in the proposal pool without modified lines being generated elsewhere. However, Request can never be the best proposal.

In this example, you are advised to keep Request as your translation, and create it as an application standard for the domain BC. This ensures that the translation is valid in all objects belonging to the domain BC. At the same time, different translations - such as Order - can be used in other domains.

Example 4

In this example, the translation line for the source text Sichern contains the translationPrint. However, there is no valid proposal (or suitable exception) in the proposal pool, as the best proposal displayed under the translation line is Save. The line therefore has status modified, and the color displayed in the status bar is yellow.

The proposal pool has detected a changed source text. This source text used to be Drucken, which was translated correctly as Print. After it was translated, the source text was changed to Sichern. However, the best proposal for Sichern is Save. Therefore, your translation (Print) no longer matches an entry in the proposal pool, where the best proposal is Save. You can now adapt your translation to the new source text.

To use the best proposal as your translation, simply double-click it and choose Save.
If you want to keep your translation, create it as a proposal (see Example 3).

In this example, you are advised to accept the best proposal Save as your translation by copying it to the translation line. This overwrites the old translation Print.

Example 5

In this example, the translation line for the source text Drucken contains the translationPrint. There is a valid proposal in the proposal pool, as the best proposal displayed under the translation line is also Print. The line therefore has status translated, and the color displayed in the status bar is green.

You do not need to take any further action.
