Function documentationFeatures of Transit Warehousing

You can use Transit Warehousing when you are receiving or shipping cargo as part of a longer transportation chain.

Features

Freight Orders and Freight Bookings

Freight orders and freight bookings are transferred from SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM) to SAP Extended Warehouse Management (SAP EWM) by means of request messages. The system uses the information in these documents to build handling units (HUs), transportation units (TUs), inbound delivery items, and outbound delivery order items.

For more information about working with freight orders, see Processing of Freight Orders.

For more information about working with freight bookings, see Preparation for Deliveries.

For more information about freight orders in SAP TM, see SAP Library for SAP TM on SAP Help Portal at http://help.sap.com/tmInformation published on SAP site. Handling Units and Transportation Units

Transit warehousing can process HUs that do not include any product master data.

Transit HUs do not contain details of the contents of the HUs, and cannot be unpacked. They also contain the transit-warehouse specific attributes Damaged and To Be Clarified.

Transit HUs have a reference to an inbound delivery item containing the following cargo attributes:

  • The shipper

  • The consignee

  • The reference to the freight document

  • The contents are bonded goods

  • The contents are high-value cargo

  • The contents are dangerous goods

  • The HU is not stackable

  • The packaging is overdimensional

Transit warehousing processes use TU containers and HU containers to transport the transit HUs. TU containers are containers used in these processes that are loaded outside the warehouse building. They can be stationed at a door for loading, and then loaded onto a TU when ready to depart.

HU containers are containers used in transit warehousing processes that are loaded inside the warehouse building. HU containers can be loaded onto a TU, for example, for transportation to an airport.

Planned Shipping Handling Units

When SAP TM sends a freight order or freight booking to SAP EWM, SAP EWM creates the outbound delivery order and the planned shipping HUs.

The planned shipping HUs can represent the following objects:

  • Transit HUs

  • HU containers

  • TU containers

In the outbound process, the planned shipping HUs can represent TUs and vehicles as well.

The planned shipping HUs contain information about the requested HUs and the planned hierarchy of transit HUs and TU containers or HU containers. The system creates a planned shipping HU for each transit HU and TU container or HU container.

Note that you can edit planned shipping HUs only with a change request from SAP TM.

Putaway in Transit Warehousing

When you receive transit HUs or HU containers, you can choose to put them away in areas based on different criteria. For example, you can put transit HUs that are to be loaded within a short time of their arrival on an outbound staging area.

For more information about destination bin determination in transit warehousing, see Destination Storage Bin Determination in Transit Warehousing.

Receiving Damaged Handling Units

If you receive transit HUs that are damaged or have different attributes than expected, you can route them to a clarification zone for further examination and clarification.

For more information, see Handling-Unit Stock List.

Lost and Found HUs

You can use the handling-unit stock list (HU stock list) to perform floor checks. Based on the floor check, you can do the following:

  • Indicate the HUs that are lost because they are not physically in the warehouse.

  • Enter into the system the HUs that you unexpectedly found in the staging area.

For more information, see Handling-Unit Stock List.

Yard Management

If you are using active yard management, transit warehousing can be used only if the yard warehouse number is identical to the warehouse number.

If you are using active yard management, you must perform the following actions in the yard management transactions instead of in transit warehousing:

  • Indicate that the TU has arrived at the checkpoint

  • Reverse the indication that the TU has arrived at the checkpoint

  • Indicate that the TU has arrived at the door

  • Indicate that the TU has departed from the door
