Scheduling or Rescheduling Operations and Orders Using Drag&Drop

Use

You can schedule or reschedule objects in a planning chart in the detailed scheduling planning board using Drag&Drop, that is,

Reschedule a scheduled operation to another date/time or another mode , that is, to another primary resource

Reschedule a deallocated operation to a particular date/time on a specific mode

Reschedule a scheduled order to another date/time

Reschedule a deallocated order to a specific date/time

Schedule or reschedule a group of operations or orders to a specific date/time

To do this, use Drag&Drop to shift the relevant graphical object or the group of graphical objects to the desired position in the planning chart or from another (planning) chart to this planning chart.

As you shift a graphical object or a group of graphical objects, the current date/time is displayed by a vertical line at the start (forward planning direction) or the end (backward planning direction) of the graphical object. You specify the desired scheduling date/time by "releasing" the graphical object or group of graphical objects on this date/time.Depending on the planning direction , this date is the desired start date (forward planning direction) or the desired finish date (backward planning direction) for the object or objects.

You shift orders to the desired date/time, for example

If you shift operations within a resource chart or from another chart to a resource chart, you can choose how the system reschedules the selected operations

In the planning board profile, you define if the system

Shifts the operations according to their relative time position, while retaining their relative row positions

The frame track shown when the mouse is used to shift the object, shows, in this case, at which position and on which resource the operations are scheduled.

Schedules all operations that belong to the selected objects on the date/time and on the resource that you select using the mouse

Schedules the operations on the selected date/time, but retains the related modes

If you have selected one of the last two settings in the planning board profile, you can switch between the two in the DS planning board using the Mouse Cursor Determines Target pushbutton. If you select this pushbutton, the system reschedules all selected operations on the selected resources, as far as possible; if you do not select this pushbutton, the system retains the modes in rescheduling.

You can also move an activity of an operation using Drag&Drop and in doing so determine the desired date/time or the desired primary resource for this activity. However, this schedules or reschedules the whole operation: Once the system has successfully scheduled or rescheduled the activity, it starts from this activity and schedules or reschedules the other activities of the operation to the desired resource using midpoint scheduling. This means it schedules the previous activities with backward scheduling and the subsequent activities with forward scheduling.

Prerequisites

You have defined planning charts for the detailed scheduling planning board. When planning resources and dates for operations, you use a resource chart as a planning chart, and when planning the date for orders, you use an order chart, for example. For more information on the general prerequisites, see Manual Scheduling with Drag&Drop .

Under Settings Increments in the detailed scheduling planning board, you specified the desired precision with which you can specify the desired date/time using Drag&Drop. If you set the increments to be, for example, weekly , you can only shift the desired date/time for an object to the beginning (forward planning direction) or end (backward planning direction) of a calendar week.

The following prerequisites must be fulfilled in order to schedule or reschedule an activity or an operation to a specific resource using Drag&Drop:

The resource is one of the primary resources of the operation

The primary resource is displayed in the resource chart of the detailed scheduling planning board

In Functions, you can load alternative resources into the detailed scheduling planning board , if necessary.

If you want the system to automatically select possible alternative primary resources while you shift an activity or an operation with Drag&Drop, you set the Select alternative resources indicator in the detail screen of the planning board profile. The selection function for alternative resources is very performance intensive.

Under Settings Strategy you have set the desired detailed scheduling strategies that you want the system to use during scheduling or rescheduling. Here you determine, in particular, the scheduling sequence for a group of activities, operations, or orders.

Procedure

Activity

Procedure

Schedule or reschedule a single object

While holding down the left mouse button, drag the object to the desired date/time, and, if required, drag an activity or operation to the desired primary resource.

Schedule or reschedule a group of objects to a specific date/time

Select the objects that you want to reschedule.

While holding down the shift key and pressing the left mouse button, drag the group of objects onto the desired date/time

Starting from the desired date/time, the system schedules or reschedules the objects in the order that you set in the detailed scheduling strategy.

You can undo this function in the DS planning board.

Result

Starting from the desired date/time defined using Drag&Drop, the system tries to find the next available date/time on which it can schedule or reschedule the object, or the objects from the object group, based on the settings in the detailed scheduling strategy .Depending on the detailed scheduling strategy, the system automatically reschedules further objects, if necessary.

If you have set one of the insert scheduling modes ( insert operation , squeeze in operation or insert operation and close gaps ) in the detailed scheduling strategy, the system shifts operations on the resource, to create a sufficiently large gap for the operation to be inserted, or to close the gaps. The system does not reschedule these operations on other resources, that is, the mode is retained.

If you have specified in the detailed scheduling strategy that the system must consider the time relationships between the operations or the pegging relationships between the operations of several orders, the system also reschedules, if necessary, these dependent operations or adjusts the datesfor deallocated operationswhen rescheduling an operation. The system automatically carries out mode selection for the dependent operations.

If scheduling of a deallocated operation is successful, the operation is given the status scheduled .

If the system does not find a date for consistent scheduling or rescheduling of all objects concerned, or if the maximum duration set for scheduling has been exceeded, the system does not schedule or reschedule the objects. Therefore, the objects retain their original dates andin the case of deallocated objectsthey retain the deallocated status.
