Use

When you navigate a query in analysis mode, you interactively work with the query to generate different views of its data. This allows you to perform OLAP analysis, which helps you to evaluate query results from different perspectives.

After opening a query or inserting a query into a workbook, the distribution of dimensions, including characteristics and key figures or structures, into the rows and columns from the query definition is displayed in the first view of the analysis grid. Using navigation functions such as drilling, filtering, and hierarchy expansion, you can change the query and thereby generate additional views of InfoProvider data.

Most design items provide navigation functions.  The two key design items in which you can navigate in analysis mode are the analysis grid and the navigation pane, in which you can navigate in several different ways:

  • Use the context menu

Open the context menu for a particular cell using the secondary mouse button or using the BEx Analyzer menu.

For more information, see:Context Menu for Selected Cell

  • Use drag and drop

Using the mouse, drag one cell onto another either within the analysis grid or the navigation pane.

    See also:Drag and Drop Functions

  • Use symbols

The analysis grid and navigation pane may display different types of icons with which you can navigate.

    More information:Analysis Grid andNavigation Pane

  • Double-Clicking the Primary Mouse Button

You can perform the following navigation functions:

    In the navigation pane:

    • If you want to display drilled-down dimension values in a report, you can double-click a dimension. However, if you double-click a dimension that is already drilled down, the dimension values are removed from the report.
    • You can double-click an empty cell to use the input help to select a filter value for a key figure or free characteristic.
    • You can double-click a structure member (key figure) with the primary mouse button to call a dialog box to perform calculations locally on key figure data in analysis mode.

    In the analysis grid:

    • If you do not want to display drilled-down dimension values in a report, you can double-click a dimension.
    • You can double-click a structure member (key figure) to filter the results according to this structure member.

In the context menu you have access to the menu itemsCharacteristic Properties, Key Figure Properties andQuery Properties to change the display and create new views of the data.  You can useGoto to jump to documents and targets using the report-report interface, if customized in your query. Finally, if your query is input-ready, you can enter data into input-ready cells to perform planning functions (seeFunctions for Manual Planning).

Additional design items provide specialized navigation functions:

  • Select filters with the following design items:
  • Activate and deactivate conditions using theList of Conditions
  • Activate and deactivate exceptions using theList of Exceptions
  • Execute customized navigation functions using buttons (for more information, seeButtons).
    Note
    • When you navigate, you change the query and create new views of the query data. If you want to save the state of the query after analyzing and navigating, deselect the Restore Initial Query Viewproperty in each data provider (for more information, seeConfiguring Data Providers). If you do not do this, the workbook opens in the original state, as saved in the query or query view.
    • If, for example, you want to do more than just navigate in the results of the query, and want to change or edit the query dimensions you open the Query Designer using theTools function and save the query in a new state.
Features

The navigation functions you can perform vary depending on which design item and which kind of cell in the analysis grid or navigation pane you use. SeeAnalysis Grid andNavigation Pane for navigation functions specific to those items.

When you navigate, you can perform the following functions:

  • Filter a dimension according to characteristic values or hierarchy nodes
  • Drill down according to a dimension and change the drilldown state
  • Filter a dimension, and drill down according to a different dimension
  • Distribute dimensions in the row and column axes of the query
  • Change the sequence of dimensions on an axis
  • Expand a hierarchy node
  • Activate and deactivate conditions and exceptions (for more information, seeList of Conditions andList of Exceptions)
  • Perform planning functionality
  • Convert currencies
  • Use Goto to reach jump targets
