Item Scanning

General

When the customer scans an item, the handheld displays the item name and price.

In general, two screens are available: Item List View and Item View. It is possible to switch to the Item View by clicking on a particuluicontrolr item in the Item List View. When the Back button is uicontrollicked uicontroln the Item View, the screen returns to the Item List View.

The customer can also access images/items of the products in various screens (Item View, Item List View.)

Offline Case

If the customer's personal device loses its connection to the SAP Omnichannel Point-of-Sale by GK – Self Scanning Service due to network issues, the customer can continue with their shopping trip and scan more items without any interruption. While the customer's personal device is still stably connected to the network in the device dispensing area, it downloads a mini version of the store inventory in the form of a SQLite database, which operates autonomously from the store network. The mini database contains the most important item information for the customer, such as the barcode, price and item name, to keep the database file size as small as possible. The size of the SQLite database file depends on the total business unit inventory. When scanning items offline, the Self Scanning Client is still able to calculate and display the total purchase amount, but images/pictures of the item are not available.

Note:

A customer who brings their own mobile device to the store will download the SQLite database to their phone when they scan the login barcode to signal the Self Scanning Client to start the shopping trip. The time it takes to download the SQLite database to the personal mobile device depends on the wireless network connection within the store and the SQLite database file size.

The customer will always know whether the price shown in the virtual shopping basket of the Self Scanning Client has been calculated online or offline. If the price of the scanned item is shown in gray, the device is offline. If the price of the scanned item is shown in blue, the device is online.

When the network connection is re-established, the SAP Omnichannel Point-of-Sale by GK – Self Scanning Service processes the items which were scanned offline in the background and it is possible to continue scanning additional items.
