Functions in the Long Text Editor

Display the Source and Target Texts

If you want to see how the source text or target text is displayed when accessed from an application, choose  Goto  Display Source Text  or  Goto  Display Target Text . If the displayed text contains links to glossary definitions or other long texts, they are highlighted in a different color. You can click highlighted texts to check that all such links function correctly and that your translation is consistent with the referenced text. You can also use this function by clicking the icon with the Display Source Text tooltip above the source text window, or the icon with the Display Target Text tooltip above the target text window.

Display Other Target Language

If you want to display the text in another target language, choose  Goto  Display Other Target Language . The dialog box that now appears enables you to select a target language. Alternatively, you can specify another language that is always displayed by default. To do this, call up transaction SE63, choose  Utilities  User Settings , and enter the required language in the Text Display in Other Language field on the Languages tab.

Display Other Target Language for Related Objects

To display the translation of related objects in a target language other than your own, choose  Goto  Other Target Language (Related Objects) . To determine which target language is displayed, see the information in the Display Other Target Language section of this document.

Display and Edit Related Objects

If you choose  Goto  Related Objects , you can access objects with a technical reference to the object you are currently translating. Related objects are objects with a technical reference to another object, such as all of the Screen Painter, interface, and report texts for the program SAPLABC, or the long texts that explain the function of data element <XYZ>. If you have opened an object for translation in the long text editor, you can display and then translate all of the related objects.

This function in the long text editor works in exactly the same way as the same function in the short text editor. For more information, see Accessing Related Objects from the Short Text Editor.

Display and Edit XML Tags

If you have not selected the Display Tags Expanded checkbox in the long text editor settings, you can choose  Utilities  Expand Tags  and  Utilities  Collapse Tags , or the icons with the Expand Tags and Collapse Tags tooltips, to expand or collapse the tags in your object.

To edit or copy XML tags, you must first unlock them. You can only unlock expanded tags.

To unlock tags and lock them again, choose  Edit  Unlock Selected Target Text  and  Edit  Set All Locks  or the icons with the Unlock Selected Tags and Lock All Tags tooltips above the target text window.

Tag Consistency Check

When you save an active version of your translation, the target text is automatically checked for syntax errors. If the system finds a syntax error, you cannot save an active version. An error message is displayed. The Tag Consistency Check function helps you to avoid making syntax errors, and to find and correct them if necessary. The tag consistency check takes place automatically when you perform the following activities:

• Lock tags / unlock tags

• Display target text

• Save raw

• Save active

The system compares the tags in the source text with the tags in the target text, and assigns one of the following statuses to each of the tags in the target text:

• OK (green)

• Warning (yellow)

• Error (red)

If all of the tags are OK, the required activity (such as Display Target Text) is performed. Warnings are displayed in the status bar. The required activity is performed, despite the warnings. If the check finds just one erroneous tag, the activity is not performed. Instead, the analysis results are displayed in a separate window. All of the tags in the target text are listed here, together with their status, their position in the target text, and a description such as that the tag must be closed.

You have two alternatives:

• If you choose Cancel, the analysis results are closed and you return to the long text editor.

• If you choose Ignore All Errors, the analysis results are closed and the system tries to perform the activity you originally requested.

If you want to correct a tag, proceed as follows:

1. In the results window displayed after the tag consistency check, click on the tag you want to correct.

   The entire line is selected.

2. Copy the line to the clipboard.

3. To return to the long text editor, choose Cancel.

4. If the tags are not already expanded, choose  Utilities  Expand Tags .

5. Choose the Find in Target Text icon above the target text window.

6. Paste the copied line into the Find What field.

7. You only want to search for the tag, which means you need to delete all of the additional information in the Find What field.

8. Choose Find Next. If there are several hits, refer to the position displayed in the analysis results dialog box to help you.

You can perform the tag consistency check manually at any time. To do so, choose  Goto  Checks  Tag Consistency Check . If you start this check manually, the results window is even displayed if the status of every tag is OK.

Some characters in XML are displayed as a character string within the text to be translated, rather than as a tag. For example, " is displayed as &quot;. The tag consistency check does not check these character strings because they belong to the text, not the tags. If they contain errors, you cannot save an active version.

Insert XML Tags

If you want to insert tags in your translation, proceed as follows:

1. If the tags are not already expanded, choose  Utilities  Expand Tags  or the icon with the Expand Tags tooltip to expand the tags in your object.

2. Place the cursor in the text at the position where you need to insert the tag, and click the icon with the Insert Tag tooltip above the target text window.

   A dialog box is displayed, containing a list of all tags in the source text.

3. Select the required tag and choose Insert Tag.

The tag (or a combination of opening and closing tags) is inserted into your translation.

Text Compare

You can compare a changed source text with a previous version of the source text in the system to determine how the text has changed since it was last translated. To do so, click the icon with the Text Compare tooltip. The system compares the version number of the current source text with the version number of the previous version of the source text, and then displays the source text again. All changed, deleted, and new lines are highlighted. The Next Unchanged and Next Difference buttons enable you to navigate the list, and the Settings and All/Differences pushbuttons enable you to determine how the list is displayed.

The first time you save your new translation, the text compare function stops working. If you want to use the text compare function to update the translation of a long text that has undergone major changes, you are advised to open a second session. In the first session, you can adapt your translation to the individual changes made in the source text. In the second session, you can display the text compare to retain an overview of all the changes made in the source text. You are also advised to print the text compare.

Delete Target Text

To delete the entire target text, choose  Edit  Delete Target Text  or the corresponding icon above the target text window.

Undo

You can undo the last action you performed by choosing Ctrl + Z.

Copy Source Text

You can copy the source text to the target text section of the long text editor. When the source text is copied, all formatting and technical links are copied too. This means you do not have to maintain them manually in your translations, which reduces the chances of errors occurring. To copy the source text to the target text window, choose  Edit  Copy Source Text  or the icon with the Copy Source Text tooltip above the target text window.

Save Active

After you have finished your translation, you must save it as an active version. Choose  Object  Save Active  or the icon with the Save Active tooltip. For more information, see Saving Long Texts as a Raw or Active Version.

Change Size of Source and Target Text Windows

There are two ways of determining the size of the source text window in relation to the size of the target text window in the long text editor:

• Place the cursor on the five dots at the bottom of the source text window, depress the left mouse button, and drag the source text window up or down to its required size.

• Click the icon with the Maximize/Restore Window tooltip above the target text window. The target text window is maximized to 100%. You can click the icon again to restore the target text window to the size it had before you maximized it.

All of the changes that you make to the size of the source and target text windows in accordance with the above information only apply to the object you are currently translating. If you leave the editor and then access this object for translation again, or another object, the size of the windows is determined by the value you entered in your long text editor settings.

Comment for Object

To enter a comment for a long text object, choose the icon with the Create Comment for Object tooltip or  Edit  Create Comment for Object . The Comment for Object dialog box enables you to enter several lines of text, change an existing comment, or delete the entire comment. The comment applies to the entire object and is displayed in the Info on This Text group box. If the comment consists of several lines, the system only displays part of the text in the Info on This Text group box. To display the complete comment, click the comment in the Info on This Text group box, or choose the icon with the Display/Edit Comment for Object tooltip or choose  Edit  Display/Edit Comment for Object .

Technical Information

To display technical information on the object you are currently translating, choose  Utilities  Technical Information  or the icon with the Technical Information tooltip.

Translate in SAPscript Editor

To translate a SAPscript-based long text object in the SAPscript editor, rather than in the XML-based long text editor, click the Translate in SAPscript Editor icon on the toolbar (or push Ctrl + Shift + F5). The long text is converted from XML back to SAPscript and appears in the SAPscript editor. If no translation exists yet, the source text is copied automatically to the SAPscript editor where you can overwrite it with your translation.

You must set the SAPscript line editor as the default editor. Call up a long text for translation and choose the Translate in SAPscript Editor button. Then select  Goto  Configure Editor  and ensure that the Graphical Form Painter and Graphical PC Editor checkboxes are deselected.

Find and Replace

To find in the source text, or find and replace in the target text, click the icon with the Find in Source Text tooltip above the source text window or the icon with the Find in Target Text tooltip above the target text window. Alternatively, choose  Utilities  Text Search  Find Text (Source Text)  or  Utilities  Text Search  Find Text (Target Text) .
