Object Types for TranslationLocate this document in the navigation structure

Definition

Every translation object in an SAP system has an object type. Data elements, messages, hierarchy node texts, and search helps are all examples of short text object types.

In the translation environment, each object type is assigned to an object group. An object group consists of object types that logically belong together because they have a similar translation priority. For example, the short text object types listed above are all assigned to object group A5 User Interface Texts because they appear on user interfaces and therefore have a very high translation priority.

Use

Object types and object groups enable you to define the scope of translation for each target language.

Example

You need to translate into target languages English and Simplified Chinese.

You want all texts that end users and developers see to be available in English. For Simplified Chinese, you only want to translate the texts that an end user sees. You also have F1 Help texts that you want to translate into English only, and forms that you want to translate into both English and Simplified Chinese.

  • You define object groups A5 User Interface Texts, A6 Table Entries, B5 SAPscript: Forms and Styles, C6 F1 Help and G5 Technical Short Texts for translation into English.

  • You define object groups A5, A6, and B5 for translation into Simplified Chinese.

Integration

If you activate an object type for a target language, objects of this object type are included in the worklists and statistics for this target language when you create and then evaluate an object list to generate worklists and statistics.

If you do not activate an object type for a target language, no objects of this object type are included in the worklists and statistics for this target language.

If you do not activate any object types for a target language, no objects of any object type are included in the worklists and statistics for this target language.

If you decide to activate automatic distribution for a target language, you must maintain distribution parameters for each activated short text object type. You can do this while you activate, or after you have activated, object types for translation. For more information, see Automatic Distribution.
