Administering SAP NetWeaver
Use this scenario variant to administer your SAP NetWeaver system landscape. For effective administration with as low a TCO as possible, we recommend that you use the System Administration work center of Enhancement package 1 for SAP Solution Manager 7.0 from which you can access your entire system landscape.
For a central administrative approach, we recommend that you use work centers within SAP Solution Manager 7.0. From SP15 and above, SAP Solution Manager 7.0 offers the functionalities of work centers. Four of these work centers – System Administration, System Monitoring, Job Management and System Landscape Management – are used for landscape wide administration activities.
The scenario variant differentiates between typical administrative tasks such as starting and stopping, and tasks in the context of job management:
● Using the SAP Solution Manager 7.0 System Administration work center, you have a single point of access to all systems of your landscape. Administration tasks such as starting and stopping systems, task management and user management on the different systems can be done from the work center by selecting a system from the overview and then drilling down in that same view to the associated tool located locally on the system. Depending on whether the system is a ABAP only, Java only or dual stack, the System Administration work center provides links to relevant system administration tools located locally on the systems.
For the system administration of the ABAP stack of the SAP NetWeaver system, the System Administration work center provides a number of tasks in the Central System Administration (CSA) which can be set up for different systems in the landscape. In addition, the System Administration work center exposes several ABAP tools/transactions (like client administration, defining and scheduling Background jobs, Data Archiving monitor, Internet Communication monitor etc.) for system specific administration.
For the system administration of the Java stack of the SAP NetWeaver 7.0 system, both the SAP Visual Administrator and the SAP NetWeaver Administrator are available. However, the Visual Administrator is version-dependent, meaning that you always have to use the appropriate version for your Support Package status. You can also only ever connect to exactly one SAP NetWeaver. SAP is in the process of phasing out the Visual Administrator. For future releases of SAP NetWeaver (SAP NetWeaver 7.1 onwards), the Visual Administrator will not be shipped; all its functionality and more will be available in the SAP NetWeaver Administrator. If a system is a Java only or dual stack, the System Administration work center will expose the SAP NetWeaver Administrator as a link for system administration.
● Job management was previously only possible in the local system or using external job schedulers. With SAP Solution Manager Job Management work center and SAP Central Process Scheduling by Redwood, job management is now performed centrally for an entire IT system landscape. This includes the definition, scheduling and the monitoring of jobs.
For scheduling jobs on the Java stack, the SAP NetWeaver Administrator (available as a link from the System Administration work center) offers a tool called the Java Scheduler.
For centrally managing and orchestrating underlying processes that need to take place across multiple applications and organizations in order to complete a business process, SAP provides a solution called SAP Central Process Scheduling which is also accessible (as a link) from the Solution Manager 7.0 Job Management work center, if configured correctly. More information is available under SAP Central Process Monitoring by Redwood for SAP NetWeaver 7.0.
