Contingent Assignment Assignment of operational or exercise relationships to contingents.
The actual operational structure/exercise target is formed from the operational/exercise relationships of force elements (823 and 826) and positions (824 and 827) for higher-level force elements that lie within an operational/exercise period (see infotype 1956 ) and are assigned to a contingent.
Within an operational structure/exercise target, the assignment of a force element or position to the higher-level force element in the period in which both objects are valid does not contain any gaps. One of the following relationships always exists for a point in time:
Relationship with contingent assignment if you have assigned the subordinate object to a contingent explicitly.
The validity period of a relationship with contingent assignment falls within the validity period of the contingent affected and can therefore have a maximum duration matching that of the contingent. You have to create a corresponding relationship with contingent assignment for each contingent to which a force element or position is to be assigned.
Relationships without contingent assignment that the system creates automatically if you have not assigned a contingent.
Relationships without a contingent period are a technical prerequisite only (for example, to be able to change operational structures later) and have no business-related function.

When you change operational structures/exercise targets, contingents, and relationships, the system creates the required relationships without contingent assignments automatically. Conversely, the contingent assignments you made replace the existing relationships without contingent assignments.
You configure the
user settings
of the
Structures
Workbench
to define whether all relationships are to be shown in structure displays or those with contingent assignment only.

Relationships (823 and 824) with and without contingent assignments
O = force element (organizational unit), S = position
The example in the diagram shows the following validities and assignments:
The operation already exists before the actual operation period and is valid until 12/31/9999. It has an operation period without gaps that consists of three contingents. This operation period is within the operational period.
Operational force element FE 1 was created on the same day as the operation with the current date and is valid until 12/31/9999. It is assigned to all three contingents. The other matching validity periods for the directly assigned objects contain relationships without contingent assignments.
Operational force element FE 2 was created at a later time with the current date and is also valid until 12/31/9999. It is partly assigned to the second contingent and fully assigned to the third contingent. The other matching validity periods for the directly assigned objects contain relationships without contingent assignments.
The position was created on the same day as the higher-level force element FE 2 with the current date. It has the same contingent assignments as FE 2. The other matching validity periods for directly assigned objects contain relationships without contingent assignments.
Force element FE 3 originates from another structure (such as the organizational structure) and its validity period starts before the validity period of the operation. It is fully assigned to the first contingent and partly assigned to the third. The other matching validity periods for the directly assigned objects contain relationships without contingent assignments.
