 Calculating the Work Content

Use

If you produce several materials or variants on a line, the duration of the line activities can vary for the materials in a line segment. Therefore you have to ensure optimum utilization of the takt time with the average duration of the line activities. This average duration is known as work content.

This work content is the sum of the average duration of all line activities that can be carried out in a line segment or in a work area. So, the work content corresponds to the average time for which the takts of the line element are occupied.

Prerequisites

Features

If you have assigned the modes of the line activities to the line elements in a line balance, the system calculates the work content from the duration and the percentage of materials in the model mix. For each material, it multiplies the operation time with the percentage in the model mix and adds these values.

Example

You produce three variants of a material on a production line with the following proportions in the model mix:

  • Variant 1 to 30 %

  • Variant 2 to 30 %

  • Variant 3 to 40%

Five line activities are assigned to line segment 1. From this, the system calculates the following average work content of line activity 1:

(10 seconds x 30%) + (10 seconds x 30%) + (0 seconds x 40%) = 6 seconds

The following screen displays the average duration of line activities 1-5 in the relevant line segment. The line segment has a work content of 78.1 seconds.
