Exploding a Line Routing for Line Balancing

Use

The system explodes the line routing and determines the line activities needed for producing the material or product when you process line balances in line design for configurable materials or products. The line activities are determined by the assigned components.

Prerequisites

You have assigned the components .

Features

The system follows the following rules when determining whether a line activity is executed:

  • A line activity is always executed when you have not assigned components to it. Exception: Line activities assigned to a line operation (see example).

  • A line activity with component assignments is executed only when at least one of the assigned components is selected at explosion.

  • A line activity with component assignments is not executed when none of the assigned components is selected at explosion.

The following examples make the procedure clearer:

Example 1

Line activities A1, A2, and A3 are assigned directly to the line routing. You have assigned components K1 and K2 to line activity A1.

All three line activities are executed when component K1, for example, is selected when the product variant structure for the material is exploded.

Line activity A1 is not executed when neither component K1 nor K2 is selected at explosion because these components are not needed to produce the material (component K1 is an optional extra, for example, such as air-conditioning, which is not installed in every model). A2 and A3 are executed because no components are assigned to them so they are always executed.

Example 2

Line activities A1, A2, and A3 are assigned to a line operation. You have assigned components K1 and K2 to line activity A1.

All three line activities are executed when component K1, for example, is selected when the product variant structure for the material is exploded.

None of the line activities are executed when neither component K1 nor K2 are selected at explosion because the components are not needed to produce the material.

Example 3

The procedure for exploding the subrouting is identical to that for the line routing:

Line activities A1, A2, and A3 are assigned to a subrouting. You have assigned components K1 and K2 to line activity A1.

All three line activities are executed when component K1, for example, is selected when the product variant structure for the material is exploded.

Line activity A1 is not executed when neither component K1 nor K2 are selected at explosion because the components are not needed to produce the material. A2 and A3 are executed because no components are assigned to them so they are always executed.
