 Line Balancing

Purpose

Describes the process for balancing lines .

Prerequisites

  • You have created a product structure and a process structure with type Routing (Line) for the materials/products that you want to include in the model mix.

  • You have created the line structure.

Process Flow

  1. Creating a Model Mix

You create the model mix that you want to base the line balance on. The system needs the model mix to determine the work content .

  2. Creating a Line Balance

You create an iPPE object for the line balance and specify validity periods for this line balance.

  3. Checking the Process Structures

You check whether the components have been correctly assigned.

If you work with alternative line structures, you check whether you have created the correct activities for the lines/line segments belonging to groups of alternative lines, and activities for multiple work centers.

  4. Assignment of Activities

You access the line structure again using the Line Balance iPPE object and assign the activities.

  5. Assignment of Production Resources

You can also assign production resources to elements in the line structure to represent the available capacity at the line segments. You can increase the available capacity. To do so, increase the number of assigned production resources in the Number field on the Production Resources tab page for the line element. In the SAP APO, you can check the utilization of capacity at the line segment using the actual production program. For more information, see Capacity Utilization in the APO documentation on the planning matrix.

Result

You have created a line balance and thus determined the assignment of activities and also the indirect assignment of the components. You can now assign supply areas to the line elements.

The assignments of activities and components are exploded during production planning in the SAP APO system by the rapid planning matrix .
