Named entity recognition

(NER) seeks to locate and classify atomic

elements in text into predefined categories such as the names of

persons, organizations, locations, expressions of times, quantities,

monetary values, percentages, etc.

NER systems take an unannotated block of text:

Jim bought 300 shares of Acme Corp. in 2006.

And produces an annotated block of text:

<PERSON>

Jim

</PERSON>

bought

<QUANTITY>

300

</QUANTITY>

shares of

<ORGANIZATION>

Acme Corp.

</ORGANIZATION>

in

<DATE>

2006

</DATE>
