Find out what's new in the latest version of SAP Analytics Cloud.
Version 2023.20
SAP is pleased to announce a new version of SAP Analytics Cloud.
General
- While managing scheduled publication, you can now see more details about the status of your scheduled events from your workspace calendar. You can view the detailed status of the publication generation and delivery for each individual view and user on every scheduled publication event.
Stories
- As a story designer in Optimized Story Experience, you can now copy and paste widgets, scripting elements and pages from one browser tab to another. Copy and paste items across composites or between composites and optimized stories is also supported.
- For chart tooltips in the optimized story experience, you can now set the measure/account tooltips to use the same number scale as the one used in the chart.
- When adding the Version (or Category) dimension to the Color section for your chart, you can now choose to use the measures/accounts to set the color and patterns. This feature is only available in the optimized story experience.
- When creating story calculations based on data from the new model (with an account dimension), you can now use MEMBERLOOKUP and ACCOUNTLOOKUP functions in the calculations. This feature is only available in the optimized story experience.
- When using a restricted measure calculation that includes a Version dimension, you can now remove the version dimension from the chart axis. This feature is only available in the optimized story experience.
- As a developer, you can develop custom add-ons for the built-in widgets in SAP Analytics Cloud. The custom add-ons can then be uploaded to SAP Analytics Cloud and added to widgets in optimized stories to customize the elements, such as tooltip and plot area.
Data Acquisition, Live Data Connections, and Integration
- We've made significant improvements to the scalability, resilience, and correctness of master data acquisition from SAP BW (SAP Analytics Cloud agent 1.0.385 or above required). These improvements apply to acquisition of non-hierarchical characteristics without query view conditions and hierarchy node filters on other characteristics.
Planning
- When you use the Add Member functionality in a table, inner dimension members relative to the member where you trigger this functionality are now automatically replicated and filled into the new line. This enhancement is also available to tables built on SAP BPC live data models.
- When configuring the API step of multi actions, you can now select the Require CSRF Token checkbox and enter a CSRF token URL if a CSRF token is required by the external application you want to use.
- In table forecast layouts, you can now set Week as the granularity for Range (a new option used for setting the timeframe covered in a forecast layout), Look back additional, and Look ahead additional. In rolling forecast layouts, the Week granularity is now available for Look back and Look ahead.
- In validation rules created by combining dimension members, you can now copy dimension member combinations from other applications like Microsoft Excel or from existing member combinations, and paste them into the validation rule grid, either by using dedicated buttons or via keyboard shortcuts. This helps you quickly add many member combinations into your rule.
- In IF statements of advanced formulas, you can now use "==" or "!==" to define a dimension combination filter that produces a scope of dimension member combinations based on whether or not dimension properties match.
- When editing a public version with the recommended planning area defined in the model settings, you can now first select the checkbox Auto-generate based on the table context in the Builder panel of the table you're working on before putting the public version into Edit Mode. The recommended planning area that's applied also takes into account the table context that covers story, page, and table filters. This helps you further restrict the size of the recommended planning area to improve performance, especially for large public versions.
- In data actions, you can now select the checkbox Allow "All Members" as a parameter property. Parameters with this property enabled can be used in the source context of different types of data action steps. In data action triggers, you can now choose Member Selection, Input Control, or Story Filter to set values for such parameters using the All Members selection.
- You can now benefit from features of the Multi Actions Service API on the API Business Hub.
- The following Story APIs can now be used to customize the
planning area:
- As an application designer or story developer in optimized story experience, you can use getPlanningAreaInfo with filter related APIs to define customized planning area. You can further use startEditMode and copy API to edit or copy the customized planning area.
- As an application designer or story developer in optimized story experience, you can use startEditMode API to start edit mode on specific planning areas in public versions.
- In both analytics designer and optimized story experience, the copy API to now supports the options to create a planning version from visible data and customized planning area.
Calendar
- Next to the planned start and end dates of calendar events, you can now see the actual dates of the events in the List workspace and in the Details panel of an event. Both planned and actual dates are visualized in the Gantt chart. Administrators can turn off the display of the actual dates under . For details, see Work in the List Workspace.
- To better identify overdue and delayed events, you can now filter your calendar List workspace according to their time-related status (On Track, Delayed, or Overdue). For details, see Filter Calendar Events.
- When the owner or involved people of a calendar task series remove a single occurrence from their calendars, the occurrence is now displayed as decoupled occurrence in the calendars of other involved users. Any updates to the series won't be applied to this occurrence.
Data Analyzer
- In the table visualization in data analyzer you can now scroll horizontally if the table has a large number of columns. If there are more than 100 columns a warning message is displayed to use the filter function and restrict the number of columns.
- You can now find the
following improvements for the chart usage in data analyzer:
- You can now also use the Stacked Column and the Stacked Bar charts for the visualization of your data.
- You can now use the chart visualization with all model types except the classic account model.
- There are user experience improvements in the builder panel for charts.
- In data analyzer you can now drag objects from the
Builder panel on the table. The following object
types are supported:
- Dimensions
- Display attributes (connected with the associated dimension)
- Measures
- Structures

General
- When you are configuring a custom SMTP server, as an administrator, you now have the option to change the default email address to another valid email address. After which, all notifications and emails from SAP Analytics Cloud will have this new email address as the header sender address.
Stories
- In the optimized story experience, you can now use the keyboard to navigate through the story filters and input controls.
- In the optimized story experience, you can now change the default story settings for thresholds in the story's theme preferences. There are five pre-defined threshold states to choose from, and you can change the colors or symbols for each of these states.
- In the optimized story experience, you can now display dimension totals as a bar in your chart, or as part of the color or trellis feed. (The feature works in bar/column, stacked bar/column, and Marimekko charts.)
- In the optimized story experience, you can now sort and rank the percentage or absolute variance in your charts.
- In the optimized story experience, you can now activate/deactivate SAP BW conditions in charts.
- You can now migrate existing stories with choropleth layers to the optimized design experience or create new ones.
Planning
- When adding an API step to your multi action, you can now insert parameters in the selection field.
- When working in a table, you can now copy a single source cell and paste it to multiple cells at the same time.
- When creating a multi action, you can now include up to 50 steps.
Modeling
- Currency conversion workflows have been enhanced thanks to a redesign of the toolbar and a new drop-down menu to help you switch between your rate table and a list of conversion errors. Currency tables are now easier to maintain, navigation has been refined, and a brand-new wizard now helps you add missing rates to your currency conversion tables quicker than before.
- To offer a consistent user experience, the option Enable Currency has been removed from the properties section in the modeler's side panel. Instead you can create a property of type Currency in the Create Property dialog.
- You can now change the data source
or edit the query definition of an import job based on a model with
measures.
This enhancement should also help adapting changes to the external data source from which data needs to be brought into the model.
This increased flexibility allows to adjust existing import jobs to changes both in the model, and in the external data source, while preserving the import job settings. This reduces the effort to create new import jobs from scratch. - The Data Import Service now allows you to import currency conversion data to your model.
Data Analyzer
- In data analyzer you can now
use the cascading filter effect for dimensions in the following ways:
- Turn on cascading effect in the dimension member dialog for the list of available filter members of a single dimension.
- Turn on the cascading effect on the filter line for all dimensions added to the filter line. This overwrites the settings of all filter tokens in the filter line but can be turned back to the default dimension setting.
- When you work on a story (in optimized design and view experience) you can now enable data analyzer also on a chart via the builder panel (by checking the property Enable Data Analyzer).
Content Management
- You can now download or upload packages in the Content Network through API endpoints.

- In the Optimized Story Experience, you can now use the keyboard to navigate between widgets on story pages as well as within the menu options in the widget context (More Actions) menus.
- In Optimized Story Experience, as a story developer, you can use setAllMembersSelected API for selecting all members on an input control, and isAllMembersSelected API for confirming whether all members have been selected. In addition, you can write scripts for an input control’s onSelect event, which are executed when viewers change the member selections.
- How comments in your tables refresh now follows the modes you set for Data Refresh. This helps avoid unnecessary fetching of comments and improve the performance of your optimized story, especially when you have many tables or a large number of comments.
- You can now add long text paragraphs in all form of comments (excluding dimension comments). 10,000 characters are the new character limits per comment (dimension comments continue to have 255 characters limit per comment).
- As a custom widget developer, you can upload your custom widget’s JSON file and resource file at the same time. Resource files can now be hosted on SAP Analytics Cloud instead of an external web server.
- In Optimized Story Experience, you can now customize the variance colors for your charts.
- As a story designer using the Optimized Story Experience, you can now change the horizontal filter bar into a vertical filter panel, and you can also define the default orientation for view mode.
Planning
- For a story in optimized story experience, you can now create a forecast layout using calculation input controls even when your model enables Week-Based Date Pattern or uses a user-managed time dimension.
- In the version management panel, you can now directly create a blank public or private version without copying an existing version. Creating a blank public or private version has fewer restrictions than copying an existing version and allows for more flexibility when managing your versions.
- In data actions, you can now change the default model after adding data action steps. Previously, you were only able to change the default model before adding steps to your data action.
- In multi actions, you can now add data locking steps to protect your data from unwanted changes.
- In the allocation step of data actions, you can now choose non-default hierarchies for source and target dimensions. Creating hierarchies specific to your allocation scenario allows you to define an efficient and easy-to-maintain set of allocation rules.
- There are new privileges for the data action monitor. If you have Read or Manage permission for Data Action Monitor Administration, you can now view all data action jobs, including the name, trigger source, and model data. Additionally, if you have Manage permission for the data action monitor administration and Execute privilege for the data action, you can cancel data actions that were triggered by other users.
- In the allocation step of data actions, you can now create a structured allocation directly from the data action designer. The new data action allocation steps can be edited in the designer and do not need a time reference.
- In the data action monitor, you can now view data actions that are part of a multi action executed in the calendar.
- You can now use planning capabilities, like entering data, in a table built on an SAP BPC live connection model with Universal Display Hierarchy enabled in its underlying query.
- The copy step of data actions has new copy rule behaviors for copy rule for copying along time dimensions. You can now use user-managed time dimension, time dimensions with week granularity, and time dimensions with weekly patterns. These improved copy rule behaviors allow for more flexibility and have fewer restrictions than the previous copy rule behaviors.
- When using the version management panel, you can now choose to display only the versions that are currently being used.
Mobile
-
Optimized stories now support canvas pages and advanced mode features on mobile. For a listing of restrictions please refer to iOS Mobile App Feature Compatibility.
Modeling
- The Data Import Service is an open API that allows you to import fact and master data to SAP Analytics Cloud. Along with its Data Export Service counterpart, the Data Import Service offers bi-directional data flows, helping you:
- Export data out of SAP Analytics Cloud models,
- Perform advanced operations using external engines, custom logic, proprietary machine learning algorithms,
- Import enriched data to SAP Analytics Cloud models,
- Consume that data in SAP Analytics Cloud planning and analytical workflows.
- The Apply selected dimension as a filter option is now available for stories based on the same SAP Datasphere model, and designed either with Optimized View Mode enabled or created using Optimized Design Experience. Use this option in stories to create and open hyperlinks to other stories with dimension filters applied.
- As an administrator, it is now possible to view all API subscriptions for all models in an SAP Analytics Cloud tenant under the Subscriptions Overview tab in the Connections page.
- In the
Modeler you can now use a new editor for editing parent-child hierarchies
for dimensions. It offers the following enhancements: -
-
You do not need to load all dimension members upfront before opening the parent-child hierarchy editor, which allows you to handle dimensions with a large amount of members.
-
New sorting capability enables you to sort all direct children of a parent member by their ID or description (ascending or descending) and the sort order will be saved.
-
New filter capability to filter the members that are currently displayed in the tree to those matching the entered value (either in ID or description).
-
For small dimensions with less than 1.000 members the member list offers the additional view “Unused” (in addition to “All” and “In Use”), which displays only members that are not yet contained in the hierarchy.
-
- The Enable Legacy Export option that allows you to enable data exports to other applications such as SAP S4/HANA, SAP Business Integrated Planning, SAP BW and SAP BW4/HANA using OData services, can now be found under the Data and Performance tab in the model preferences.
- Two new Subtotal and %Subtotal functions have been added to the Modeler. With these functions, you can now return the subtotal or percentage of subtotal for a member broken down by one or multiple dimensions.
Data Analyzer
- In the available objects list of data analyzer, the dimensions are now grouped as defined in the model.
- The available dimensions and measures in the data analyzer filterline dropdown list are now shown in a hierarchical structure.
- When opening data analyzer from the table in a story, you can now choose to open data analyzer in a new browser tab or to open it in the current tab. When data analyzer is opened in a new tab, the story will remain open in the initial tab. When opening data analyzer in the current browser tab it is opened in place as overlay.
- You can now use the toolbar functions Undo, Redo and Reset in data analyzer. These functions support all actions that manipulate the data source in the table (like for example sorting, swap axis and more) . They do not support table styling settings and general appearance settings of UI elements.
- As a user of a story in
optimized design and view mode, you can now open data analyzer not only from
a table but also from a number of supported chart types via the actions menu
item Open Data Analyzer. The supported chart types are:
- Column
- Bar
- Line
- Numeric
- Pie
To be able to use the action menu item for a chart, the data analyzer property has to be enabled via the Story Details dialog (by selecting in the File menu of the story. When opening data analyzer from a chart, the chart data is transferred and mapped to the data analyzer table.

Whether you were building stories or analytic applications, you can now use the new Optimized Story Experience, which integrates features in both stories and analytics designer. You can create customized interactions and add custom logic with a variety of widgets, functionalities, and scripting capabilities. Here is a list of the functional and usability-specific highlights of the new Optimized Story Experience:
-
Unified Design Time
-
The new Assets panel makes it easier for you to build your story by dragging and dropping any available widgets.

The Outline panel lists all the widgets added to each page or popup in a structured way, as well as scripting elements used in your story.
-
Respective design experiences for story designers and story developers. Added capabilities such as scripting, advanced widgets and CSS are available if you’re a story developer, who is assigned to the Application Creator role.
New widgets include Button, Input Field, Text Area, Checkbox Group, Dropdown, Filter Line, List Box, Radio Button Group, Range Slider, Slider and Switch. As a story developer, you can assign scripts to them to create customized interactions.
-
You can align widgets, set their size and position, disable mouse actions to resize or reposition them, and change their edit time and view time visibility to manage all the widgets in your story.
-
-
Edit-View Switch
You can choose whether to view your story in the current tab or a new tab by default.
NoteIf the story contains scripting elements, you can only view in a new tab. To view the newly created story in a new tab, you need to save it first. When you view in a new tab, only saved states are displayed.
-
Scripting Capabilities
As a story developer, you can create script variables, script objects and technical objects, and use APIs related to widgets and other services to add custom logic to your story. All the scripts are based on JavaScript.
-
Custom Widget with Data Binding
You can use custom widgets in your stories, which extend the predefined set of widgets provided by Stories. Like other widgets, custom widgets now support data binding and filtering.
-
Flexible Theming and CSS Capabilities
-
Creating themes is more intuitive with widget previews available for you to adjust styling settings and better design your story.
-
After configuring styling preferences for the current story in design time, you can create a theme from them, which can be reused in other stories.
-
In addition to setting styling in Styling panel and theme preferences, as a story developer, you can define CSS classes for either the whole story or any widget, page or popup, which brings more flexibility and granularity to the styling in your story.
-
-
Linked Widgets Diagram
In design time, after creating linked analysis or filter line in your story, you can open Linked Widgets Diagram, which offers a graphic overview of the relationships among widgets. In addition, you can modify the existing relationships for each widget directly on the diagram.

-
Configurable View Time Widget Context Menu
In the Styling panel of a widget, you can select what actions to be exposed to your story viewers when they open the context menu on it.
-
View Time Navigation
As a story designer or developer, you can choose to show view time page navigation as tabs, a dropdown, or none to use your custom navigation style.
-
Customizable View Time Toolbar
At design time, you can customize the view time toolbar, so that specific quick access and submenu functions are displayed to your story viewers.

-
Filter Panel Enhancements
As a story viewer, now you can manage your story filters in a vertical filter panel, which makes it easier to view hierarchies and to see a long list of members.
-
Unified Bookmark Workflow
In bookmarks global settings, story designers or developers can update version so that bookmarks created in other versions become invalid. Story developers can also choose what to include in bookmarks.
In addition to filters, input controls and prompts, story viewers can now bookmark widget states, such as the display of data, and width and height. They can choose whether to save the last changed values of dynamic variables.
All the bookmarks can be accessed from the Bookmarks tab of Stories start page.
-
Export to PDF
-
When you export your story to PDF in view time, you can now define orientation, page size and page number position of the export, add header or footer, and include comments.
-
Story developers can use Export to PDF technical objects with related APIs to define the export behavior for viewers, such as what components to include in the export.
-
-
Scheduling
Scheduling publication for stories is now supported in Optimized Story Experience. Note that only PDF format is available, and there’re added file settings such as paper size and whether to include comments. You can also enable other viewers to customize the values of script variables when they open the story.
-
Last Refreshed Date and Time Support for Dynamic Text
At design time, you can add last refreshed data and time of any SAP BW live data model used in your story to Text, table title and chart title.
-
Binding Image to Script Variable
As a story developer, you can bind the Image widget to a script variable in your story, whose value can be the source URL of any image.
-
Widget Data Refresh Settings
In the Builder panel of charts or tables, you can choose to refresh only active widgets in view time to avoid unnecessary fetching of the result set and thus improve the performance of your story.
-
View Time Script Performance Analysis
In view time, you can use the Script Performance Popup to analyze the performance of scripts used in your story. It visualizes the duration of script execution, and operations that affect script performance.
-
Loading Optimization
Whether in edit time or view time, you can choose to load contents in the background or restrict content loading to the visible area of the screen to improve your story’s performance.
-
Data Analyzer Integration
You can open the new Data Analyzer from a table in your optimized story.
-
Mobile Support
Viewing optimized stories is supported on SAP Analytics Cloud iOS and Android mobile apps, as well as in iOS Safari browser.
-
Stories
- In tables built on SAP BW or SAP BPC live connection models, you can now add point comments.
-
In the optimized story experience, you can now add comments to tables built on models with user-managed time dimensions.
Planning
-
In multi action steps, you can now add and create parameters by choosing the
icon in the designer panel.
Calendar
-
There are the following changes for processes:
-
Processes with assignees now receive their statuses and progress from their assignees.
-
The status and progress of processes without assignees is defined by their child events. Canceled child events are excluded from the status and progress aggregation.
-
When reopening a parent process that has an assignee, the owner can decide to reopen the process only, or the process and its child events.
-
The statuses Accomplished and Partially Accomplished are no longer in use. To align between manual and automatic events, the statuses Successful and Partially Successful are used instead.
For details, see Calendar Processes: Aggregation of Status and Progress.
-
-
Owners of calendar events are now notified if an event is being changed by another owner who is currently updating the same event or who has scheduled longer running changes to multiple events including this one in the Edit Events wizard. The notified owners can refresh the details panel directly from the message, and proceed their work once the message disappears.

-
General
- You can now add comments in the comment widget to data sourced from single column dimensions in an analytic model.
- You can now schedule a publication for stories and analytic applications that are in optimized view mode, just like you would in the classic mode.
Stories
- You can now add data point comments and dimension comments to tables with single column dimensions in their axes or filters. Note that such tables are built on analytic models.
- You can now create running total calculations (such as sum, count, max, min, and average) that can be used for all tables and charts in your story. This feature is only available in the optimized story experience.
- For both private and public generic as well as organization dimensions, you can now enrich a dimension using coordinate data within the modeller. The enriched dimension can be consumed as a location dimension in Geo Maps. Note: this feature is only available within the Optimized Story Experience.
- SAP Datasphere Analytic Models are now supported in stories created using the Optimized Design Experience. If you have a live connection to SAP Datasphere, you can now access Analytic Models along with Analytical Datasets and Perspectives. The model selection dialog has also been enhanced to allow browsing for both live connections and models directly within the dialog. For more information, see Live Data Connections to SAP Datasphere.
- As a story designer, you can now decide how your users apply changes to multi-selection filters:
- Immediately update the chart or table contents as members are selected or deselected in the filter.
- Make your changes in the filter dialog and then use Apply Selections to apply all the changes at the same time. (This is the default setting for new member filters that allow multiple selections.)
This feature is only available in the optimized story experience.
- For stories in optimized design experience, you can now create a dynamic forecast layout using calculation input controls.
Modeling
- In the Data Management space, by default, only the file and the SAP BPC options are now available as export options. To be able to push data to other applications such as SAP S4/HANA, SAP Business Integrated Planning, SAP BW and SAP BW4/HANA using OData services, you now have to switch on the Enable Legacy Export option first. Please note that as a best practice, we recommend using the Data Export Service whenever possible to export data. For more information, see Learn About the Modeler.
- The Data Management space has been enhanced with a new API Subscriptions tab to provide a visual user interface to the Data Export Service, in order to visualize and manage all your model subscriptions directly within SAP Analytics Cloud. For more information, see Learn About the Modeler and Manage API Subscriptions for Data Exports.
Mobile
- The Android mobile app is now available to download from the Tencent Appstore.
Planning
- With the new debugging tool of data action tracing, you can set tracepoints in a data action, execute the data action, and check the intermediate results at tracepoints, as well as data changes between tracepoints, in a story-like table layout. Note that such an execution doesn't pause at these tracepoints or make actual changes on the target version. Based on insights from tracing, you can edit and refine your data action to fix its issues so that it can work as you desire.
- You can now regenerate data locks by using the Redeploy Model option in model preferences.
- In the predictive step of multi actions, you now have the option of saving the forecast values for past periods.
- In data actions, you can now view the auto-generated rules in the cross-model copy step.
Data Acquisition, Live Data Connections, and Integration
- The following SQL Server databases are now supported by import data connections: Microsoft SQL Server 2019, PostgreSQL 10, PostgreSQL 11, PostgreSQL 12, PostgreSQL 13.
- CSV exports can now be scheduled with an hourly cadence.
- New Concur connections can now be created with a new authentication workflow. For more information, see Import Data Connection to SAP Concur.
