Objectives
An objective is an indicator of a perspective that describes a specific, measurable component of the vision and mission of the organization. Objectives represent critical, actionable, and measurable components of a desired state within the context of perspectives.
Use objectives to measure the vision and mission of the organization within the context of perspectives.
An objective has the following structure:
An identifying name that appears in a rectangular box in the Objectives view.
An associated perspective. In the Objectives view, the perspectives appear in a rectangular box at the top of each column of objectives associated with this perspective.
A status indicator that appears with the objective name in most cases throughout the application.
During the initial implementation phase of a scorecard project, objectives are not yet associated with KPIs and the objectives appear without any status indicators.
When the objective is eventually associated with KPIs, the objective shows a status indicator. The color of the status indicator represents the performance of this objective based on the performance of its underlying KPIs. Each associated KPI's score determines the status of the objective. How the KPI statuses are indexed, calculated, and weighted for the objective determines the objective's status.
When an objective is associated with KPIs but still does not display a status indicator, it means there is null or missing data for that objective. The scorecard administrator can control whether to display a status indicator in this situation and which color to display.
Associated KPIs, a score, and a calculation method which are collectively used to determine the status indicator color of the objective. These details are shown in the Objective Details view.
The status indicator color is determined by converting the Score value of each associated KPI to the appropriate Index Value on the objective's colored dial. The Index Values are processed with the calculation method (for example, they are averaged), and the resulting score of the objective is matched to the relevant color on the color dial.
For more information, see Example of How an Objective's Status Color is Determined.
May show an exclamation point (!) if there is an underlying problem.
Exclamation points show abnormal performance. They serve as alerts that at least one associated KPI is underperforming and requires attention. An objective with a positive status indicator, such as green, and an exclamation point suggests that there may be a reason to get details about the objective to review its KPIs. An objective with a dark green status indicator and an exclamation point has at least one KPI that is either yellow, red, or dark red. An objective with a green status indicator and an exclamation point has at least one KPI that is either red or dark red. An objective with a yellow status indicator and an exclamation point has a KPI that is dark red. If the objective has a red or dark red status indicator, no exclamation point is displayed because the status indicator color is an obvious indicator that the objective is performing poorly.

Objectives appear in the following areas of the application:
The Objectives view in the Scorecard component shows all the objectives in the context.
For more information, see Objectives View.
The Objective Details view in the Scorecard component shows details about one objective.
For more information, see Objective Details.
The Scorecard Overviews view in the Scorecard component may show a view of objectives in relation to perspectives, related KPIs and/or initiatives.
For more information, see Scorecard Overviews View.
The Scorecard Comparison view in the Scorecard component may show a view of objectives in relation to their perspectives and related KPIs.
For more information, see Scorecard Comparison View.
The My Performance Summary section of the Home component allows you to monitor selected objectives.
Initiative authors can link their initiative to certain objectives. The associations appear in the Details view in the Initiatives component and the Objective Details view in the Scorecard component.
You can see the objectives associated with a context, perspective, or KPI when you click on that item in the Strategy component.
