Use
While translating in the short text editor, you can use functions that enable you to display texts in other target languages.
Example

The following example illustrates how this function can help you to translate a source text whose meaning is unclear.

  • You are translating from English to Japanese.
  • You do not know if the English source text Change Document is a compound noun, or a verb followed by a noun.
  • Although you do not speak German, you do know that compound nouns in German are written as one word.
  • You display the German texts for the English source texts in the object
  • The German text is one word: Änderungsbeleg. Now you know that the English source text is a compound noun, which enables you to translate it accurately into Japanese.
  • If the German text had been Beleg ändern (that is, two separate words), it would have indicated that the English source text is a verb followed by a noun instead.
For information on how to display proposal pool entries for a specific source text in a different target language, see Functions in the Short Text Editor and refer to the section Display Proposals for Source Text in Other Language.
Procedure

To display the texts in the current object in a different target language, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose Start of the navigation path Goto Next navigation step Texts in Other Language Next navigation step Current Object End of the navigation path.

  2. If you have not maintained the Text Display in Other Language field in your language settings, the Target Language dialog box appears. Select a target language with a double-click.

If you have maintained the Text Display in Other Language field in your language settings, the Target Language dialog box does not appear. For more information on the language settings, refer to Transaction SE63 and read the section Defining Your Translator Settings.

The system displays a separate dialog box that lists all of the source texts in the object, together with their translations in the selected target language.

  3. To close this dialog box, choose Continue.

To display the line on which your cursor is currently positioned in all of the target languages that exist in the system, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose Start of the navigation path Goto Next navigation step Current Text in All Languages End of the navigation path.

  2. A dialog box appears containing the source text and all of its translations in the system. To close this dialog box, choose Continue.

Note

If you specified languages in the Display Current Text in All Languages: Restriction group box in your short text editor settings, the system displays a dialog box that only contains the languages that you specified. If you then decide that you want to display all available languages, choose Display All Available Languages in the dialog box.

To display texts of a related object in a different target language, proceed as follows:

  1. Choose Start of the navigation path Goto Next navigation step Texts in Other Language Next navigation step Related Object End of the navigation path.

  3. If the system finds more than one related object, the Object Selection dialog box appears, listing all of the related objects. Select the related object whose texts you want to display in a different target language.

If you select a short text object, the system displays a separate dialog box that lists all of the source texts in the object, together with their translations in the selected target language.

If you select a long text object, the system displays your source text in one dialog box, and its translation in the selected target language in a second dialog box.

  4. To close this window, choose Continue.
