Gateway Monitor - Transaction SMGWLocate this document in the navigation structure

The Gateway Monitor (transaction SMGW) is used for analyzing and administrating the gateway in the SAP system.

You can launch the Gateway Monitor via transaction SMGW or by choosing the following menu path: Start of the navigation path Administration Next navigation step  System Administration Next navigation step Monitor Next navigation step System Monitoring Next navigation step Gateway Monitor End of the navigation path

You can still continue to run the gateway monitor at operating system level from outside the SAP system. Use program gwmon.exe for this.

The initial screen of the gateway monitor shows all the active gateway connections on this application server instance.

Tip You can switch application server instance in transaction SM51.
Tip If there is also a gateway configured on the ASCS instance, you can access its administration functions from the following menu path: Start of the navigation path Goto Next navigation step ASCS Gateway Monitor End of the navigation path.

The columns in the gateway monitor on the initial screen in the default setting have the following meaning:

Column

Explanation

Number

Number to identify the connection.

Local LU Name

Host on which the local partner program is running or is to run.

Local TP Name

Long transaction program name, or the name of the local program that was started by the gateway.

If it is an ABAP program (protocol: internal communication), you can see the service (port) of the local gateway here.

Remote LU Name

Host on which the remote partner program is running or is to run.

Remote TP Name

Long transaction program name or the name of the remote program that was started by the gateway.

If it is an ABAP program (protocol: internal communication), here you can see the service (port), which the program communicates with.

User

Name of the user who is currently using the connection

Status

This field indicates the status of the connection: It can have the following values:

  • unused: Connection is not being used

  • Initial: Connection is being initialized

  • Initializing: Connection initialized

  • Connecting: Connection is opening

  • Connected: Connection is made

  • Is being interrupted: Connection to be closed down

  • Interrupted: Connection closed down

Symbolic destination

The symbolic destination is required when CPIC connections are set up and is a key for the TXCOM and side information tables. These tables manage the required connection parameters.

First the system attempts to read unknown parameters from table TXCOM. Afterwards the Gateway reads all the parameters not defined in this table from the side information.

Conversation ID

The conversation ID is a unique number that can be used to identify the connection. By clicking this field, you can display details of the connection.

Protocol

This field indicates the protocol agreed with the client: The following values are possible:

  • Internal Communication: Communication partner is an ABAP program (the same or a different SAP system)

  • External Communication: Communication partner is an external program

  • Registered Communication: External communication with registered program

Last Request

Time of last activity

SAP Error

SAP return value: These return values are defined by SAP; you can display an overview in F1 help. The previous and following syslog messages provide further details on the source of the error. If the syslog messages are not sufficient, the relevant trace files must be analyzed.

The return codes are described under Error Analysis.

You can add the following columns to the gateway monitor from the column set:

Table 1: Optional Columns of the Gateway Monitor
Column Explanation

Connection
Status

Status of the connection to a client or another gateway at TCP/IP level. The default value is CONNECTED.

Protocol

This field indicates the protocol agreed with the client:

Request

Timestamp of the last request that was processed in this connection.
