Procedure documentationEditing Content and Layout Locate this document in the navigation structure

You edit a page to determine its content, the format in which the content appears, and the property values of both the page and the content.

Content editing activities focus on object properties and object status, and can be performed in either the default Page Content mode or the Page Layout mode.

You perform layout editing activities to determine an object's physical placement on a page in the Page Layout mode. You access this mode by selecting Page Layout under the function buttons at the top of the content area. For information about layouts, see Page Layouts.

The function buttons in the editor indicate the operations that you can perform on the page itself and on objects that you add to the page. The buttons that become accessible when you select an object for editing, depend upon the page view and the action you want to perform. For example, selecting a single item on the page enables all of the function buttons, while selecting all items enables only the Remove button.

If you navigate to another editor (for example, Permissions, Related Links) while editing a specific page, and you want to return to the Page Editor, from the Display dropdown list, select Object.

Note Note

Since the Portal Catalog does not display the contents of a page, to view the page's contents without opening the Page Editor, right-click the page name in the Portal Catalog and choose Preview. A separate window opens to display the current status of the saved page. The preview only uses the default page layout, even if you have chosen a different layout.

End of the note.

Procedure

To edit a page, in the Portal Catalog right-click the relevant page and choose   Open   Object  . The Page Editor opens and you can perform the following operations:

Page Content Mode

Operation

What You Should Know

Add an object to a page.

See Adding Content to a Page.

Preview a page after adding or removing content.

Choose Preview to display the current status of a page in the editor, not its status in the PCD.

The preview only uses the default page layout, even if you have chosen a different layout.

Lock an object to the page by selecting the checkbox in the Fixed column.

When an object is set to Fixed:

  • The checkbox in the Visible column is automatically selected.

  • At runtime, portal users may minimize the object in the content area, but not remove it from the page during personalization.

  • It is automatically displayed when the page first opens.

The default status for a newly-added object is Not Fixed.

Hide an object by clearing its checkbox in the Visible column

A hidden object is not displayed when the page first opens.

During personalization at runtime, portal users have access to all the objects associated with the page (whether currently displayed or not), and can redefine any hidden object as visible.

The default status for a newly-added object is Visible.

Sort the objects in each column by clicking the appropriate arrow in the column heading.

To select or clear all the objects on a page, click the icon in the heading of the first column, and choose Select All or Deselect All.

The Open button is disabled when more than one object is selected.

Some editing options are not available on an “edit all” basis.

Click Properties to:

  • View and edit the default property values of a page or selected object

  • Access the attributes of each property

The Properties button is disabled for unsaved, newly-added iViews.

By default, opening the Page Editor also opens the Property Editor displaying the properties of the page in focus.

Click the arrow beside a property to view or edit certain property attributes. For information on attribute values, see Defining Property Attributes.

Click Open to edit the properties of an object in the page.

When editing a nested page, clicking Open displays any other pages and iViews belonging to that page. You can then edit the properties of all the nested objects, not only those of the page.

When you select the smallest unit on a page (iView) for editing, the Property Editor expands to the entire content area.

If an object has its own editor, such as a URL iView, clicking Open reveals the object's editor.

For more information about editing object properties, see Property Editor.

To view the relationships between a selected object and other objects in a delta link chain, including the source object, click Delta Link Tracer.

The displayed page is read-only and is for the purposes of:

  • Displaying all objects that are affected if you edit the selected object.

  • Providing access to the source object.

For more information about delta link origins, see Tracing Delta Link Dependencies.

Delete an object or multiple objects from a page by selecting the appropriate checkboxes and clicking Remove.

Child objects do not appear in the navigation panel. When you remove a child object from a page, you render it inaccessible, unless you reinsert its source object.

If you decide not to remove the object, from the tool area choose Refresh before saving the page.

Choose Show <page name> Properties to return to the properties of the page you originally opened for editing.

Page Layout Mode

When working in Page Layout mode, you can perform the following editing operations. When you have finished click Save.

Operation

Comments

View the page layouts assigned to the page.

From the Show Layout dropdown list, select the layout you want to view. The page adjusts accordingly.

Add layouts that were not originally assigned to the page, remove layouts that you do not want associated with a page, or change the default layout.

Click Define Layouts, follow the instructions in the Select Page Layouts pane, and then click OK to return to the Page Editor.

Custom layouts are only relevant for portal pages based on the default page template. When working with Web Dynpro pages, you cannot see any custom layouts in the interface.

Change the location of an iView within its container

Select the item you want to move, then drag it up or down to relocate it.

Place a selected iView in a different layout container

Drag the item to the preferred container.

Since each column contains only one container, this action is not applicable to a page based on a one-column layout.
