Templates contain metrics, events and alerts (MEA) for managed objects; for further information about using templates, see Create Templates.

To enhance the E2E Monitoring and Alerting infrastructure with your own metrics and alerts to monitor log files, you must first create your own template. Base it on the templates delivered by SAP. SAP delivers templates with useful default values for all monitoring use cases for various types of managed objects, by product version.

Create your own template in SAP Solution Manger Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP).

Prerequisites

This section assumes that you have initially configured technical monitoring.

Activities

To create a customer template, proceed as follows:

  1. Call the SAP Solution Manger Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP).

  2. Go to Technical Monitoring, select the use case System Monitoring, and go to the step Template Management.

  3. Go to change mode by choosing Edit.

  4. To create a customer template, determine the managed object type (e.g. Host, technical system or technical instance). This depends on the type of log file which you want to monitor. For example, to monitor the Windows event log, create a template for   Host (Server)   Windows  , to monitor other ABAP log files, create a template in   Technical Instanc   <ABAP release>  .

This selection also determines the environment in which your metrics are displayed in technical monitoring.

  5. When you have determined the managed object type and product version, choose the corresponding SAP template, and choose Create Customer Template. Enter the name of your template in the Template Settings tab. You can also specify the template notification and incident settings, usually the global settings.

    Note Note

You can also change an existing customer template.

    End of the note.
  6. Save the template, and specify a collection, if you want to transport it. If you do not want to transport the template, set the Local Object flag.

  7. Create the required metrics and alerts to monitor your log files. This is described in detail in the two following sections:

  8. Save your customer template.

  9. To use the template for your managed objects, assign it to them, and activate. You can do this in two ways

    • Use your template as default. Choose the managed object type (such as Technical System) in the navigation bar. The default templates for each product are listed in the Dafault Assignment tab. You can make your assignment here.

To activate this template for the managed objects, select them in the Specify Scope step, and in the next step, Monitoring Setup, and choose Copy and Activate.

    • Assign managed objects to the template. Go to the next configuration step, (Specify Scope), select the managed objects, and go to the next step (Set Up Monitoring). You can assign these managed objects to the template. Activate the assignment with Copy and Activate.

    Note Note

For further information, see the help for each step.

    End of the note.

Example

There is an example of monitoring additional log files, from the creation of a customer template the creation of metrics and alerts, to data display in technical monitoring, under Log File Monitoring Example.
