To monitor more log files in the monitoring and alerting infrastructure than the default settings delivered by SAP. You have created a template in the SAP Solution Manager Configuration (see Create, Assign and Activate a Customer Template), and the required metrics (see Creating a Metric).

Create alerts for the metrics, in your template, and assign metrics to them.

Activities

You are in the SAP Solution Manager Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP) in the step   Technical Monitoring   System Monitoring   Template Management  , and are editing a template which you created. You have specified the required metrics. To create alerts for them, proceed as follows:

  1. Go to Expert mode.

  2. To create a new alert, choose the drop-down box   Create   Alert  .

  3. In the user-defined alert creation wizard, enter the required information in the 7 tabs. In the Overview enter the basic alert details.

    Input field

    Meaning

    Name

Alert name; the alert is displayed under this name in the technical monitoring alert inbox

    Category

Alert category; most log file monitoring alerts belong to the category Exceptions.

    Severity

Alert rating, a number between 0 (very low) and 9 (critical)

    Do not group occurrences

Select this checkbox to not group all occurrences of the alert with same rating (red or yellow) from same managed object under one alert group, in Alert Inbox. Alerts should normally be grouped, so the checkbox is not set.

    Active

Set this flag, so that the alert is used.

    Customer description

Enter a description of the metric.

  4. You can overwrite the default values for this alert in the Messages, Notifications und Third-Party Components tabs.

    Note Note

Make the default settings in the SAP Solution Manager Configuration (transaction SOLMAN_SETUP) in the step   Technical Monitoring   System Monitoring   Default End-to-End-Alerting Settings  .

    End of the note.

These options are described in the help for the step Default End-to-End-Alerting Settings. You will usually use the default settings, so you do not need to make any changes in these tabs.

  5. You can overwrite the default settings for this alert, in the Automatic Reactions tab. You will usually use the default settings, so you do not need to make any changes in this tab.

  6. In the Rules tab, specify how an event or alert is rated if it depends on several metrics. There are the following rule types:

    Rule type

    Description

    Best Case Rule

The event is rated as the best among all ratings of the metrics involved

    Worst Case Rule

The event is rated as the worst among all ratings of the metrics involved

    Average Case Rule

The event is rated as the average of all ratings of the metrics involved

  7. The technical IDs of the alert are output in the Others tab. You can specify a technical name for the alert. The name must start with Z, to put the alert in customer namespace.

  8. Go to the next step in the wizard. Assign the alert to the metric. The metric list shows the metrics of this category which can be assigned. If you created the metric correctly in the previous step, it is displayed here. Assign the metric.

  9. End the wizard with End, and save the template.
