Maintaining the Federated Portal NetworkLocate this document in the navigation structure

Purpose

This IT process describes the steps that administrators on a producer and consumer portals need to perform in order to ensure a stable and optimized portal environment in which business users can perform their daily tasks (see Using the Federated Portal Network ).

SAP NetWeaver provides a complete set of tools to maintain, manage and monitor each portal in the federation.

Use of the Process

This process is part of the following IT scenarios:

Prerequisites

  • The consumer has completed the steps described Creating Federated Portal Network Content .
  • You are logged on to the portal as an administrator. The workflow described below defines which administrator role is required to complete each step.
  • You have the necessary portal permissions to work with the required portal objects.

Process Workflow

The following process flow relates to a single producer-consumer relationship. Repeat the steps for each additional producer-consumer pairing.

  1. System administrators on the producer map remote users to local content accessed from the consumer portal. (Optional)

Mapping of logon credentials for users, such as user name and password, to secured data sources provides single sign-on (SSO) capabilities.

  2. Content administrators on the consumer check the status and viability of content that is based on remote applications.
  3. System administrators maintain the producer and consumer portals in the federation.

Steps include maintaining and monitoring connectivity between producer and consumer, consumers tracking active producers, and producers tracking registered consumers. Other tasks include those required to keep an independent portal up and running (see Maintaining the Portal in the Providing Uniform Content Access scenario variant).

Result

Business users are able to work in a stable and optimized portal environment.

By monitoring the short, medium, and long term activities of portal users, administrators can adjust the portal settings to improve its performance and generate better acceptance by users. Content delivered to portal users can also be customized and enriched to help users accomplish specific tasks more efficiently and to make new features available.
