Information Lifecycle Management
The IT
scenario variant
information lifecycle
management is made up of three main pillars: Data
Archiving,
Retention
Management,
Retention
Warehouse.
Information lifecycle management from SAP (ILM from SAP) is a licensable
product that must be switched on, using the switch framework (transaction
SFW5). Classical data archiving can still be used as before, as it is
delivered with the standard. For ILM from SAP, classical data archiving was
enhanced to allow for the integration with the other two cornerstones of ILM.
Because of these different constellations, you must perform different configuration steps for each scenario:
● ADK-based Data Archiving
This technology is purely ABAP-based. At the time of
archiving, you must make several basis Customizing and other Customizing
settings. For more information on Customizing for ADK-based archiving see
Introduction to
Data Archiving and
Customizing.
● XML-based Data Archiving
This technology is available for ABAP applications that employ XML archiving objects and for JAVA applications that use archiving sets to archive data in the XML format. For each technology option different configuration steps have to be performed to set up the system for data archiving. These steps are described separately for each option:
○ XML Data Archiving Configuration Steps for ABAP Applications
○ XML Data Archiving Configuration Steps for JAVA Applications
● Data Archiving and Retention Management
This constellation is available for ABAP applications that have licensed and switched on the ILM from SAP functions. Although currently only ABAP information objects are managed, a JAVA stack is required to be able to implement an end-to-end ILM solution. To set up the systems for ILM you must perform different configuration steps described under:
○ Information Lifecycle Management Configuration Steps
ILM from SAP is a new capability going into Ramp-Up with SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Enhancement Package 1. During the Ramp-Up, the use of ILM from SAP is subject to certain limitations. Refer to SAP Note 1168187 for a list of restrictions. If you are interested in becoming a Ramp-Up customer you must first contact SAP at ILM@SAP.com.
