In the properties for a query, you can specify whether rows or columns that contain zeros as values are to be displayed.
You have the following options for the query properties:
● You can specify that zeros are to be displayed (No zero suppression takes place).
● If you want to suppress zeros, there are two setting options: Active and Active (All Values = 0).
● You specify whether zero suppression is to apply to rows and columns, to rows only, or to columns only.
● In the properties for a structure, you can also define whether zero suppression is to be applied to structure elements.
The two settings Active and Active (All Values = 0) only differ in how they affect queries that have characteristics in the rows and columns (cross-classified table). For queries that have characteristics in the rows and key figures in the columns (or the other way around, with key figures in the rows and characteristics in the columns), the effect of the settings Active and Active (All Values = 0) is identical.
For example, you have the following query in which the characteristic Month is in the rows and the characteristic Customer is in the columns:
Active Setting
If you use zero suppression with the Active setting, the system checks whether there are zero values in the results area (last column of the table, colored yellow here). If there are zero values in the results area, the corresponding row or column is hidden. If you specify that zero suppression is to be applied to Rows and Columns, the query is displayed as follows:
Active (All Values = 0) Setting
If you use zero suppression with the Active (All Values = 0) setting, the system hides all rows or columns that contain zero values. If you use the Active (All Values = 0) setting for Rows and Columns, the query in the example above looks as follows:
If a detail row is not equal to zero (for example, in a hierarchy), all superordinate rows are displayed, even if they contain zeros. As a result, the system ensures that the business context of the query is retained for the end user, even when active zero suppression is used.
For example, you have the following query in which the characteristic Country and the characteristic structure Electronics are in the rows and the key figure Number of Products Sold is in the columns:
The characteristic value Motherboard Notebook Speedy I CN has zero values that you want to hide. In the properties for the query, activate zero suppression and in the properties for the electronics structure, choose Apply Zero Suppression to Structure Elements. The query is displayed as follows:
Make the required setting in the Query Properties under Suppress Zeros. In the Structure Properties, you can specify whether zero suppression is to be applied to the structure components.
The corresponding setting options are available in the following areas of the Business Explorer:
