Procedure documentationApplying ILM Rules to Data

In data archiving, the system evaluates the existing ILM rules for each ILM object and determines the following properties for each policy category:

Effect of Retention Rules on Data

ILM rules of the policy type retention rules affect the data when data archiving is performed.

Filling Archiving Files

In data archiving, the system creates archive files, the data of which is grouped according to the conditions of the ILM rules and the determined retention periods. This means that archive files receive their unique places in the storage hierarchy of the ILM store.

The grouping of the data objects according to retention periods adheres to the following principles:

  • All data objects in an archive file have the same end date for the minimum retention period.

  • The data objects of an archive file can have different end dates for the maximum retention period. (To destroy an archive file, the earliest maximum end date of the retention period is decisive)

ILM Archive File Conversion

You can recreate archive files that were created without ILM rules or with outdated ILM rules using the ILM Archive File Conversion function. To do so, the system opens the archive files, applies the ILM rules to the data, and writes each grouping of data objects resulting from the ILM rules into a new archive file.

Data Destruction

Yo u can destroy data in the database of the application system after the maximum retention period has expired without first archiving the data.

Prerequisites

For the system to apply the ILM rules to ILM objects, the following prerequisites need to be fulfilled for each ILM object:

  • The higher level audit areas have been activated.

  • The relevant ILM policies have the status live.

Procedure

Filling Archive Files based on ILM Rules
  1. Optional: Perform ILM archive file conversion for existing archive files that are not filled according to current ILM rules.

For more information, see: Converting Archive Files for ILM

  2. Perform data archiving for the ILM-enabled archiving objects. The system uses the relevant ILM rules on the data and creates archive files based on the properties that result from the ILM rules. Storage takes place automatically if you make the appropriate settings in Customizing.
