Background documentationTranslating POS Parameter Texts in the Store Configurator

You can use the Languages function to translate interface texts from English into the desired language or languages in the Store Configurator. You can create and maintain an instant translation of any parameter description field in the following parameter files:

  • Manager / POS Functions

  • Standard Menus

  • Custom Menu (Items)

  • Tenders

  • Profile Prompts

  • Choice Lists

  • Returns

  • Non Merchandise

  • User-Defined Transactions

  • Discounts

  • Taxes

To help you identify which parameter description fields you can translate, the system displays the translation-relevant parameters in a different color. When the conversion has been applied by the Xpress Server, the language is active for your user at all POS Clients.

Note Note

The system cannot display any non-English language either when the base system is installed in Russian or that language does not share the same code page as Russian.

Unlike translations for the Store Configurator, the Xpress Server and Xpress POS applications keep the translations in a separate parameter directory for each supported language.

End of the note.

Prerequisites

To make an instant translation of a descriptive field in a parameter file in any language, that language record (and its corresponding ISO code) must exist in the list of languages in the Xpress Language Maintenance Screen. For information about this screen, see Xpress Language.

Procedure

You make the following settings to create an instant translation of a POS parameter description field:

  1. In any parameter field in the Store Configurator application that supports the translation feature, enter text into the translatable field. In most cases this is the field description.

  2. Position the mouse pointer over this field and right-mouse click to display the field menu.

  3. Select Languages.

The Language Settings screen appears for the parameter.

  4. Enter a translation of the description for each of the other languages supported in the Store Configurator.

  5. Click OK when you have completed your language entries.

  6. Save your changes for the parameter and convert the parameters.

The system downloads the translations to the POS at the next parameter download and the translations are then available at the POS.

Recommendation Recommendation

We recommend you use this procedure to translate fields in the Store Configurator. This allows the system to export the same configuration definition for each translated value.

End of the recommendation.

Example

You are translating the description for the term Cash in the Tender Configuration Screen into English and Spanish. The exported tender parameter configuration file contains multiple entries for the description of the Cash field, each distinguished by the relevant language description and identifier.
