SAP GUI for Windows always starts in a separate window with this technique.
We recommend that you use version 6.x of the SAP GUI for Windows, since it uses less resources and starts more quickly than version 4.6.
Extension .sap is defined as shortcut in the file system during the SAP GUI for Windows installation and is linked directly with the sapgui.exe application. (see file Types definition in the Windows Explorer). You can start the SAP GUI for Windows by double-clicking.
Usage of the Internet Explorer Browser Type
In the client-server environment, such SAPGUI shortcut files can be generated dynamically by the server and returned in an HTTP response. A Web browser interprets this response as downloadable contents and displays the "File Download" dialog box. The user can download the file to start the SAP GUI for Windows.
You have to define the corresponding attributes for the SAP System that are needed to open the connection to the SAP System in the system landscape. For more information see Defining the System Landscape and Creating Systems .
If you don't want the download dialog box to appear, you can make the following setting: Deselect the checkbox Confirm Open After Download in the file type settings:

Usage of the Mozilla Firefox Browser Type
You have to register the application type Transaction with the browser by entering the path to the file sapshcut.exe . If you don't specify the path, a message dialog box will ask you how to open the file com.sap.portal.appintegrator.sap.Transaction . Select the option Open it with and enter the path to the file sapshcut.exe.
This file can be found in the installation directory of the SAP GUI for Windows under ..\SAPgui\sapshcut.exe
