Automatic Classification
When automatic classification takes place, the system assigns documents to categories in taxonomies.
In order for a document to be classified automatically, it needs to be located in a data source that is assigned to a classification index or to a combined search and classification index.
In an example-based taxonomy, the system classifies a document into a category if the content of the document shows sufficient similarity to the category in question.
In a query-based taxonomy, the system classifies a document into a category if the document corresponds to the search query that you defined for the category in question.
The system starts the first indexing run immediately when you assign a data source to an index. The documents contained in the data source are classified as long as a taxonomy exists at this point.
If you create a new document during routine operation, the time at which automatic classification takes place depends on the data source.
Web repositories are crawled at regular intervals to update the index and classify new documents.
In hierarchical repositories that support the sending of events, documents are classified immediately after being created or uploaded.
Events are only sent if you create or upload documents using KM iViews or using WebDAV. If you upload a document directly to a file system, no event is triggered and the document is not indexed. To classify these documents, use index administration to define that the repository be crawled at regular intervals.
If you delete a document, the system removes the document from the taxonomy.
You have the following ways of starting automatic classification:
From the Index Administration iView
In index administration, you can completely reindex or incrementally update an entire index or individual data sources.
From the Taxonomy Query Builder (example-based classification only)
After you have defined search queries for categories, choose Update. The system executes all defined search queries in the taxonomy, and classifies documents found. For more information, see Taxonomy Query Builder.
From the Classification Inbox iView
You can start automatic classification of unclassified documents in the classification inbox. For more information, see Starting Automatic Classification in the Classification Inbox.
You can use index administration to switch automatic classification on and off for each taxonomy.
Note
If you switch off automatic classification, the system displays categories found as system proposals in the Details dialog box for documents. You can choose appropriate categories from the proposals, and then carry out manual classification (see Manual Classification of Individual Documents).
