A federated portal network provides the users in an organization with seamless access to portal information, services and applications that is distributed on portals throughout the entire organizational network.

The federated network comprises more than one portal—and while the federation utilizes the same user base, each user should be dedicated to only one portal installation, typically the one in his or her geographical vicinity. The same portal installation must contain the role(s) to which the user is assigned—this role may be a local role or a remotely assigned role. While a local role can comprise local and remote-based content, a remotely assigned role can only offer remote content.

Procedure

...

       1.      Open your Internet browser.

       2.      Launch the portal using the URL provided to you by your portal administrator.

Example

For example: http://myserver.mydomain:50000/irj/portal/

       3.      In the portal logon screen, enter your user ID and password.

       4.      Click Log on.

Result

Apart from minor differences when mapping their user information and personalizing content, the runtime environment of any portal in a federated network is no different to that of a standalone SAP NetWeaver Portal. Users have access to the content assigned to their role only and can perform their daily tasks using the portal.
