Use

When a Target System supports device type distribution, it is possible to install a missing device type remotely in the Central System in transaction PAL. PAL checks whether the device types of the PAL Printers in a Printer Group are correctly installed in the Target System(s).

This device type check runs automatically

when you start to distribute a Printer Group to a Target System Group, PAL checks automatically whether the associated device type(s) are installed in the Target System(s).

when you use the Re-Distribution function (see: Re-Distributing a Printer Group to a Target System Group).

Requirements

Device type distribution is only supported in Target Systems with SAP NetWeaver 7.0 Enhancement Package 1 and higher.

Activities

...

When a device type is missing and the Target System(s) support the device type distribution function, you can install the device type remotely in the central system in transaction PAL.

When a Target System does not support device type distribution, you will receive the following message:

This graphic is explained in the accompanying text Device Type distribution not supported on Target System. Apply updates in Target System.

In this case, PAL has no information about whether or not the required device type is available in the target system. When the required device type is missing, distributing a Printer Group to the Target System Group which contains this Target System will fail.

When a Target System supports device type distribution, PAL checks whether the required device type is not present or whether it is outdated. You will receive the following messages:

This graphic is explained in the accompanying text Device Type not found

This graphic is explained in the accompanying textOlder Device Type version in Target System found.

In both cases, button Distribute Device Type in the last column will become active. If you want to distribute the associated device type to the Target System before the actual Printer Group distribution takes place, click this button and confirm the following message with yes.

If you do not want to distribute the associated device type to the Target System, you can also distribute the Printer Group directly by choosing Next.

Result

If Target System supports device type distribution and the device type check is successful, you will receive the following message:

This graphic is explained in the accompanying text Device Type in Target System OK.

Recommendation You can skip the successfully checked device types by selecting Show only problematic entries.
