Menus in the R/3 System

The menu structure in the R/3 System is based on an object-oriented approach (see Object-Oriented User Interface). This approach helps the user to navigate efficiently in the extensive R/3 System and allows a quick access to the functionality.

The R/3 System uses two types of menus,

the menu bar

pull-down menus

Both menu types play an important role in the R/3 System: The menu bars provide the structure, the pull-down menus offer the functionality.

Menu Bars

The R/3 menu system is made up of three categories of menu bars (see Levels in the SAP System):

the SAP standard initial menu on the main menu level for choosing the application

many menus on object class level or application level that contain the different objects of the application

a menu for each task that is the same for all applications.

Menus of the Task level

The largely standardized structure of the menus at task level is an essential utility for accessing the functionality of the R/3 System. Consistency on this level guarantees a standard behavior within and across tasks and applications. This reduces the memory load of the user considerably.
