Inspection Characteristic, Inspection Method

You use this section to customize and maintain inspection characteristics and inspection methods.

Master inspection characteristics and inspection methods are defined at plant level. They are used as copy models when you create inspection plans or material specifications.

Master inspection characteristics can be derived from class characteristics.

Master inspection characteristics can reference inspection methods and catalogs.

Prerequisites

Activities

The following text describes a procedure for organizing master records which you can use appropriatly when planning other master records, for example when you plan and maintain inspection methods.

1. Define the structure of the master records.
a) Define number ranges .
Decide whether the number assignment will be made internally or externally. We recommend that you use the automatic internal assignment of non-mnemonic numbers; for the field for mnemonic names, you can use the master record search field.
Make sure the number ranges that have been set in the standard system will be sufficient.
b) Specify version creation.
Determine whether you want to document the changes to the master records in the system with the help of new versions and if so, specify when these changes are to be documented. In the Settings at Plant Level section, set the appropriate control indicators .
c) Define the nomenclature.
If the nomencalture is clearly defined, you can find the master records more easily. For this reason, define the contents of the following master record fields:
- external number (if applicable)
- short text (language-dependent)
- search field (language-independent)
You can use the short text to search in the master record lists and the sort field to search by matchcode.
d) Make sure that the search help contained in the standard system is sufficient. If necessary, define your own search help.
a) Define the classification.
With the help of the Classification System, you can:
- Organize master records according to classes
- Conduct structured searches for master records
- Ddistinguish master records on the basis of class characteristics
With the help of class characteristics, you can determine where the master inspection characteristics are used; you can thereby evaluate the inspection results independently of plans or materials on the basis of the master inspection characteristics.
If you want to use the Classification System, you must define:
- A class hierarchy for categorizing the master records
- Key words for master record searches
- Class characteristics for the description of the master records
b) Define the contents of the master inspection characteristics.
Specify which fields should be used in the inspection characteristic master record and how they should be used. Make sure the long texts are organized uniformly.
1. Make settings for the Customizing tables
2. Make preparations for the transfer of data.
If you want to transfer part or all of the master records for inspection characteristics from other systems, you must clarify the requirements for these technical processes.
3. Create the inspection characteristic and inspection method master records.
Define these master records before you create the inspection plans.
If the inspection characteristics are to be used for the inspection specifications and for the transfer of inspection results to the batch valuation, you must also maintain the class characteristics that are linked to the inspection characteristics

Further Notes

for Version Management

The system can manage different versions of master data records for inspection characteristics and inspection methods. The individual versions are clearly identified by a current version number that is assigned internally by the system. For each version, there is a date from which the data record is valid ( valid-from date). Several versions can be valid for the same key date.

If you first create a master record (function "Create inspection characteristic" or "Create inspection method"), you can either give it an alphanumeric or numerical key, or let the system assign a numerical key ( Number range definition). The system assigns this new master record version number 1. You must specify a valid-from date for this first version.

You can create additional versions of the master record in the following ways.

1. You use the function "Create version". You must specify a date from which the version is valid. This date must not be used in another version of the data record.
2. You use the function "Change". You can choose and change a valid version for a key date.
However, if this version is released and if history management is defined for inspection characteristics or inspection methods in the settings at plant level, the system then creates a new version with the same valid-from date. The original version is saved with no changes and can still be used.
