This demo shows how characteristics are valuated for the header item entered in the sales order. The valuation only occurs at this highest level. The R/3 System creates an independent requirement for the item entered in the sales order.

The object dependencies in the BOM are not evaluated until the BOM is exploded in material requirements planning (MRP). In this case, the system only searches for material variants for the initial object, and not for lower-level configurable assemblies.
