A work center is a physical unit within a company where an activity is performed. For example, a work center may be an individual, a group of people, a single machine, or a production line.

The data stored in the work center is required for the following business functions:

• costing

• scheduling

• capacity planning

You can also create activities without work centers, for example, when you are not sure where the activity is to be performed, or if you only want to use the (standard) network to determine the dates on which the activities should be performed.

When you do not enter any work centers in the activities, the system only calculates the basic start and finish dates and does not calculate capacity requirements or costs.
