Background documentationRecall of SEPA Credit Transfers Locate this document in the navigation structure

The recall of a SEPA credit transfer (SCT) is when the originator bank requests the cancellation of a SEPA credit transfer.

According to the SEPA Credit Transfer Rulebook version 4.0, a bank can recall a SEPA credit transfer if it is a duplicate, is technically incorrect, or has been triggered with fraudulent intent.

An SCT recall has the same route as the original SEPA credit transfer (no change to the original data), and recall payment messages contain a reason code.

The following SEPA payment transaction formats are used in this process:

  • camt.056 (Recall of credit transfer)

  • camt.029 (Result of investigation)

  • pacs.008 (Original credit transfer)

  • pacs.002S2 (Payment cancellation file)

  • pacs.004 (Credit transfer can be recalled)

Within 10 bank working days of the settlement of the SEPA credit transfer, the originator bank can initiate a recall by sending a request for recall (camt.056).

For passive recalls, it is also possible to route the recall through a third-party financial institute such as a clearing house.

If the payment item has been transferred to the clearing house but not yet settled there, the clearing house stops the transaction and returns a cancellation report (pacs.002S2).

If the SCT can be processed at the beneficiary bank, a message (pacs.004) is generated. If the SCT cannot be processed, a result of investigation message (camt.029) is generated.

Payment Engine (FS-PE) enables both the originator bank and the beneficiary bank of a SEPA credit transfer to map this process.
