Background documentationNC Code Maintenance

You use this activity to define NC codes (see NC Code).

This activity allows you to do the following:

  • Assign disposition routings to NC codes

  • Define operations and disposition groups where NC codes can be logged

  • Assign NC groups to an NC code

  • Associate existing NC codes with the current NC code as secondary NC codes

  • Associate hook point activities with NC codes (see Setting Up Activity Hooks)

  • Enter values in fields defined for NC codes in Custom Data Maintenance (see Custom Data Maintenance)

Fields

The following tables describe fields requiring explanation:

Main Tab Page

Field

Description

Status

Controls whether the NC code is available for use on the shop floor

Enabled: Allows operators and machines to log NCs using this NC code

Disabled: Prevents operators and machines from logging NCs using this NC code

Assign NC To Component

Affects at which level the NC data is stored

Stay: Keeps the nonconformance information the operator logs against the SFC number

Copy: Copies the nonconformance information the operator logs against the component of the SFC number

Move: Moves the nonconformance information the operator logs against the SFC number to a component SFC number

NC Category

Failure (default): Operators should use this NC code to record that an SFC number did not comply with a standard or a requirement.

Defect: Operators should use this NC code to record what is wrong with a failed SFC number. For example, WIRE DAMAGE or CON NOT SOLDER.

Repair: Operators should use this NC code to record that the SFC number has been repaired or will be repaired.

DPMO Category

The category to which the NC code belongs

The category you assign to this NC code determines which calculation the system uses to calculate the defects per million opportunities (DPMO).

Note that a DPMO category is only applicable when the NC category is set to Defect.

NC Data Type

Displays additional fields as defined and assigned for NC data types in Data Field Definition Maintenance and Data Field Assignment Maintenance (see Data Field Definition and Assignment).

Collect Required NC Data on NC

Open (default): The NC data fields associated with the NC data type appear when you select an NC code. The system validates that a required NC data field contains a value when you add the NC code.

Closed: The NC data fields associated with the NC data type appear when you select an NC code. Allows you to add an NC code if a required NC data field does not contain a value. The system validates that a required NC data field contains a value when you try to close or edit the logged NC code. The system does not validate the required NC data fields when you log a secondary NC code.

Both: Does not allow you to add or close an NC code if a required NC data field does not contain a value

Message Type

Identifies which message type is triggered when this NC code is logged

NC Priority

The priority of this NC code

The higher the number, the higher the priority. If operators log multiple NC codes, the NC code with the highest priority determines the disposition of the part.

Maximum NC Limit (SFC)

The maximum number of times this NC code can be logged against the same SFC number

NC Severity

Identifies if and how the NC code logged for the SFC number is used to determine if this SFC number should be accepted or rejected. Total NC severity of all NC codes logged for an SFC number during processing on sampling routing is compared to NC severity threshold defined in sample plan to determine SFC accept or reject decision (see Sample Plan Maintenance). When the total severity values of the NC codes logged for the sample SFC number equals or exceeds NC severity threshold, the sample is counted as rejected. Otherwise, the sample is accepted.

None: Used for information purposes only and corresponds to 0. NC code is not considered when determining sampling results.

Low: Indicates minor defect and corresponds to 2 in total NC severity calculation for Sample SFC.

Medium (default): Indicates medium defect and corresponds to 3 in total NC severity calculation for Sample SFC.

High: Indicates severe defect and corresponds to 5 in total NC severity calculation for Sample SFC.

Secondary Code Special Instruction

Displays the entered text when an operator logs this secondary NC code

Can Be Primary Code

Selected: This NC code can be a primary NC code.

Deselected: This NC code can only be a secondary NC code.

Closure Required

Selected: Requires the operator to close this NC code if the system does not automatically close it

Deselected: Allows operators to leave this NC code open

Auto Close Primary NC

If selected, automatically marks this NC code's primary NC code as closed when the operator logs this NC code

Auto Close Incident

If selected, automatically closes the incident specified in NC Data Entry when the operator logs this NC code

Secondary Required for Closure

Selected: Prevents operators from closing this NC code until a secondary NC code has been assigned

Deselected: Allows operators to close this NC code, even if a secondary NC code has not been logged

ERP QN Code

If selected, triggers a quality notification to SAP ERP; and makes the ERP Catalog, ERP Code Group, and ERP Code fields mandatory.

ERP Catalog

The catalog type for the logged NC code

ERP Code Group

The code group for the logged NC code

ERP Code

Quality notification (QN) code in ERP for the logged NC code

Operation/Disposition Group Tab Page

Field

Description

Valid Operations

Specifies the operations where operators can log this NC code

The asterisk (*) indicates all operations.

Disposition Groups

Specifies the disposition group associated with the operation (see Nonconformance Disposition)

Enabled

Selected: Allows operators to log this NC code at an operation specified in the Valid Operations column and to use the specified disposition group

Deselected: Prevents operators from logging this NC code at the operations specified in the Valid Operations column with the specified disposition group. You can temporarily disable this row instead of deleting and recreating it.

Activity Hooks Tab Page

Field

Description

Sequence

Specifies the order in which the system executes this hook point

Hook Point

Specifies when the system should execute the activity identified in the Activity column of this row

Activity

Specifies the hook point activity. The system runs this activity when this hook point is triggered for this NC code.

Enabled

Allows you to temporarily disable the activity hook, for example when troubleshooting a problem

Selected: Allows the system to run the specified activity when this hook point is triggered for this site

Cleared: Prevents the system from running the specified activity when this hook point is triggered for this site

User Argument

Used only with hook point activities; contains additional parameters or values to be passed to the activity during the hook execution
