Calculating Flow Rates for Infusions
You can allow the system to calculate the flow rates of an infusion in the order due to other information, such as the duration of the infusion or the weight of the patient.
Caution
If the order is already active or events have been generated for this order, you can no longer calculate the dose for flow rates.
The unit of the reference dose, the alternative unit of the reference dose and the quantity unit of the agent are available as the quantity unit for the flow rate. System administration determines the unit of duration to be used (e.g. minutes) in the organizational unit-related parameter N1ADTIMU
.
If a calculation using volume and duration is set in the user-specific presettings, the flow rate is calculated automatically using these two values. In this case, flow rate calculation is only possible if you define several flow rates for the order.
Choose
(New Row
), in order to be able to enter several flow rates. Enter several rows according to the number of flow rates to be entered.
Enter all flow rates.
For the respective flow rate, on the Flow Rate
tab page, choose
(Dose Calculation
) to calculate the dose for this flow rate.
You access the Dose Calculation for Infusions
dialog box.
Select the desired ingredient or agents of the mixed drug which have the "Agent" or "Equivalent" agent role, and enter the desired dose in the Dose/Quantity
field and the duration for the flow rate calculation. The flow rate is then calculated using the selected ingredient for the calculation.
The system calculates the flow rate of the infusion using the dose/quantity.
You can also calculate the dose using the weight of the patient (per kg) or the patient’s body surface area (BSA). In the Per Unit field, define the calculation method, i.e. whether the system should perform the calculation based on the patient's weight or body surface area.
Example
You wish to calculate a dose for a small child. You choose to calculate using the body weight of the child in grams (e.g. per 100 grams).
Once you have entered the necessary data, choose
(Subtotal
) or
(Calculate and Transfer Values
).
The system transfers the calculated flow rate and the specified planned duration into the order.
If you wish to calculate the duration for the last flow rate, so that the desired total volume is reached,
(Remaining Duration
) in the toolbar of the flow rate table.
If a calculation using volume and flow rate is set in the user-specific presettings, the duration is calculated using these two values. In this case, flow rate calculation is also possible if you define only one flow rate for the order.
On the Flow Rate
tab page of the relevant flow rate, choose the
(Dose Calculation
) icon, to calculate the dose for this flow rate.
You access the Dose Calculation for Infusions
dialog box.
Enter the desired dose of the active ingredient in the Dose/Quantity
field and the duration for flow rate calculation.
The system calculates the flow rate of the infusion using the dose/quantity.
You can also calculate the dose using the weight of the patient (per kg) or the patient’s body surface area (BSA). In the Per Unit
field define the calculation method, i.e. whether the system should perform the calculation based on the patient’s weight or body surface area.
Example
You wish to calculate a dose for a small child. You choose to calculate using the body weight of the child in grams (e.g. per 100 grams).
Once you have entered the necessary data, choose
(Subtotal
) or
(Calculate and Transfer Values
).
The system transfers the calculated flow rate into the order and automatically calculates the volume of the administration.
