Deleting Connections to Source Systems

On the Metadata Extractions page, you can delete the connection for a source system to the catalog. Once the connection is deleted, all the source system's assets are removed from the catalog. The system is no longer monitored, and metadata extraction of its assets and automatic or scheduled synchronizations stop.

Prerequisites

To remove a source system from the catalog or restore it, you must have a global role that grants you the following privileges:

  • Data Warehouse General (-R------) - To access SAP Datasphere.

  • Catalog System (-RUDE--) - To view, edit, and delete source system connections and manually synchronize source system.

The Catalog Administrator global role and the DW Viewer role template (used directly as a global role) applied together, for example, grant these privileges. For more information, see Privileges and Permissions and Standard Roles Delivered with SAP Datasphere.

These steps are for deleting connections for asset-only systems. To delete connections for data product-only systems, you must exclude the system from the formation or delete the formation in the SAP BTP cockpit (see Creating SAP Business Data Cloud Formations).

Deleting a Connection to a Source System

Context

You can delete a source system's connection to the catalog to stop catalog monitoring and synchronization and to remove all its assets from the catalog.

Procedure

  1. In the side navigation area, choose (Catalog & Marketplace)Start of the navigation path Next navigation step End of the navigation path (Metadata Extractions).
  2. In the Remote Systems table under the Assets Only or Assets and Data Products groups, select the source system you want to delete and choose Delete.
  3. Review the confirmation dialog, and choose Delete.

Results

The connection for a source system is deleted, its extraction status is updated to Deleted, and all its assets are immediately removed from the catalog. The catalog also stops monitoring the system and stops all automatic or schedule synchronizations.

Select (Navigation) to view the system's details page. The page includes the date the connection was deleted, the system URL, system identifier, and a Restore button.

The source system's assets are stored in the catalog for 90 days, where only users who are catalog administrators can see them. If needed and within 90 days after the deletion date, you can choose to restore the connection. For details, see the section below: Restoring a Connection for a Source System.

After 90 days and within 24 hours of the Days Until Asset Deletion reaching zero, the source system's assets (and asset enrichments) are permanently deleted from the catalog. Depending on how the source system was connected to the catalog, it will either remain in the Remote Systems or be permanently deleted.

  • Manually connected via SAP Datasphere: After 90 days have passed, the source system is permanently deleted from the Remote Systems table and can't be restored. If needed, you can add the source system back as a new source system using the same system information as before. You'll need to redo any enrichments you previously made to the assets, such as editing names or adding relationships to glossary terms or tags.

  • Automatically connected via an SAP Business Data Cloud formation: The source system remains in the Remote Systems table until it is removed from the formation or the formation is delete. If you choose to restore the system after 90 days, you'll need to redo any enrichments you previously made to the assets, such as editing names or adding relationships to glossary terms or tags.

Restoring a Connection for a Source System

Context

If necessary, you can restore a connection to a source system that is marked for deletion within 90 days of the of deleting the connection.

Procedure

  1. In the side navigation area, choose (Catalog & Marketplace)Start of the navigation path Next navigation step End of the navigation path (Metadata Extractions).
  2. In the Remote Systems table, choose a deleted source system to open its details page.
  3. On the system details page, choose Restore.

  4. Review the confirmation dialog and choose Restore.

    After the system is restored, the page refreshes and goes back to the Metadata Extractions page. On the Remote Systems table, the extraction status of the restored source system is changed to Outdated and the authorized user is missing. All assets from the source system are restored to the catalog to their previous state before deletion.

  5. Select the source system and choose Edit.
  6. In the Edit System dialog, choose Authenticate and follow the instructions in dialog for authenticating the user for metadata extraction.
    If the source system you're restoring is a BW (SAP Datasphere, SAP BW bridge or SAP BW∕4HANA) system, the user currently logged in is automatically set as the authorized user, and you can save the change.
  7. Back on the Metadata Extractions page, in the Remote Systems table, select the source system and choose Synchronize to manually synchronize the system.

Results

All assets from the source system are restored to the catalog and updated based on the authorized user's access permission on the source system. For any new assets you create, you can edit, enrich, and then publish them.
