Account Group

Account groups define criteria that affect how the G/L accounts in the group are created.

The account group determines:

  • The allowed range from which the account number can be selected

  • The screen layout for creating G/L accounts in the company-code-specific area

Features

When you create a G/L account in the chart of accounts area, you must specify an account group.

Account groups allow you to define groups of similar G/L accounts. For example, you could have bank accounts, postal giro accounts, and petty cash in an account group called Liquid Assets.

The account group also defines the setup when creating a G/L account in the company code and chart of accounts. Defining the allowed number range and screen layout simplifies the process of creating G/L accounts by reducing the number of entry fields.

The account group contains the following definitions:

  • Allowed number range

Standard charts of accounts are recommended in most countries. These are generally created so that the numbers of similar accounts begin with the same digits. You use the account group in the chart of accounts to indicate this grouping principle. For more information, see Defining the Allowed Number Range.

  • Screen layout

The accounts within an area require the same fields for storing information when entering and processing business transactions. Using the account group, you define the fields needed for each area and the form needed. For more information, see Defining the Screen Layout.

    Note Note

Make sure you define the field status when defining an account group. Otherwise all fields are hidden.

    End of the note.

Account groups are always based on a chart of accounts.
