You use the input and output materials to describe the logistics units that enter the process or are produced by the process.

You use the input and output substances to describe the chemical elements and compounds that physically enter (that is, as real substances) the process or are produced by the process.

In the IMG activity Set Up and Activate Formula Views , you have activated the formula view.

In the IMG activity Specify Allowed Specification Types , you have specified which substance types you can use.

In the IMG activity Define Allowed Units of Measure , you have specified which units of measure you can use.

In the IMG activity Specify Events , you specified whether you are only allowed to assign substances, to which a material has been assigned in the SAP Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) component and whether you are only allowed to assign materials, to which a substance has been assigned in the same way.

In the IMG activity Specify Context-Specific Component Types , you have specified which component types you can use.

In the IMG activity Specify Context-Specific Exception Values , you have specified which exception values you can use.

You enter the output materials and output substances in the area at the top of the table. This means that you enter products, co-products, and by-products of the process as well as waste and catalysts that are no longer needed, for example.

You enter the input materials or input substances in the area at the bottom of the table. This means you enter, for example, the raw materials and substances, semi-finished products, and packaging materials that are consumed in the process, as well as catalysts that are required.

Item number and type

The item number identifies the item in the table and determines the sequence and the type of the items. You can enter items of the type standard item and alternative item . Group items are produced if you enter a substance to which several materials are assigned and you generate the material data for this substance and choose the group item when you do so.

Component type

The component type describes the function of an item in the process (for example, active ingredient, solvent, or catalyst). For alternative or group items, the system takes the component type from the relevant standard item.

Details of the item quantity

You specify the target quantity of an item along with its tolerance range. The base quantity entered in the formula header serves as the reference value.

You specify an exception value for items whose quantity you cannot determine exactly or not at all. This exception value specifies the type of exception or the reason for the exception.

For output materials and output substances that are produced in several formulas, you specify which formula is used as the default to break them down into their input materials and input substances ( Standard Explosion indicator).
