The overall structure of the screen areas of NWBC for Desktop consists of the shell, the content area with the main application, and the side panel application. You can use the side panel to display additional context-sensitive information related to the main application in a separate screen area (a container by the side of the content area of NWBC). The role definition determines which side panel application is shown for a certain application.
The screen areas of NWBC for Desktop described above are depicted in the following figure:
You can open the side panel by clicking the icon.
In the View menu, you can display or hide the side panel. It shows which side panel applications are available and which side panel application is currently displayed.
If multiple side panel applications are available, you can switch between them by clicking the arrow icon.
The following types of side panel applications are available:
Side panel applications defined by the administrator
Side panel applications that are defined for your roles in Role Maintenance (transaction PFCG) are context-sensitive. Therefore, a side panel application is only available for the specific transaction.

Side panel applications defined by the end user
You can also configure side panel applications in the frontend yourself.
For more information, see 3.4.5 Configuring the Side Panel . The side panel applications that you have configured in NWBC are the same for all applications in your roles.
The following icons are available on the side panel:
If you choose this icon, the side panel applications are informed about changes in the application. This happens automatically, except in special cases, when selecting table lines in SAP List Viewer (ALV) tables, for example.
If you choose this icon, the side panel application does not react to changes within the current application. It is frozen and it remains unchanged even if other applications are started that do not have this side panel application assigned.
