A portal page can contain iViews and other pages that contain iViews, organized in a layout. iViews retrieve information from different sources, helping users perform their business functions. Pages are one means of assigning the iViews to users and roles, and displaying the information that is retrieved.
For information about the components that construct a page, the content that you assign to it, and how it displays as an HTML page in the user's browser, see Portal Page at Runtime .
Issues to Consider When Planning Your Page
The portal lets you create two types of pages: a page based on the default portal page, or a page based on Web Dynpro technology. Each page type has its requirements and recommendations for the content that you can add to it. Other issues to consider include:
Before creating a page, consider the iViews that the page will contain, and the potential uses of the page. For example, the following two issues can affect the layout that you choose for the page:
Each iView has an optimal display mode, depending upon the information it contains.
The page might be assigned as a dynamic navigation iView to another page.
Before assigning iViews to a page, consider some of the issues that affect page performance:
The cache level of each iView, which determines from where iView data is retrieved.
The isolation method of each iView, which refers to the relationship between an iView and its page, and the iView behavior on the page.
You create a page by copying an existing page in the Portal Catalog, by copying a page in one of the Generic Portal Application Layer (GPAL) repositories, or by running the New Page wizard. When creating a page with the New Page wizard, you determine:
The technology on which to base the page
The potential arrangement of the iViews on the page
Depending upon your selection of an active layout and possible alternatives from among several predefined layouts, the new page will consist of one or more containers for holding iViews.
For more information, see Creating Portal Pages .
You add content to the page . Using the Page editor, you populate the page with other pages and iViews required by the users and roles in your organization.
For more information, see Adding Content to a Page .
You edit the content and layout of the page to determine the extent to which portal users can modify the content and layout of a page at runtime. Users can:
Move iViews from one container to another, but they cannot alter the arrangement of the containers.
Select a different layout, with a different arrangement, from among the layouts that you assign to a particular page.
For more information, see Editing Page Content and Layout .
For Web Dynpro pages, you can also create your own custom layout .
For more information, see Creating a Web Dynpro Page Layout .
After finalizing the content and layout of the page, you configure the properties of the page using the Properties editor.
For more information, see Editing Object Properties .
You can also use the Role editor to assign the page to a specific role or user . Users can access all of the portal pages assigned to all of their roles.
