The implementation of in-memory databases can lead to significant technical changes in many areas with the processing of large quantities of data, users benefit from data being displayed more quickly, and from the additional display options. In this regard, existing screen elements must be adjusted to in-memory technology. This can mean that how screen elements are used may vary slightly from before.
SAP List Viewer (ALV) is a screen element for displaying and editing large volumes of data. To use the advantages of in-memory technology optimally, the SAP List Viewer (ALV) has been adjusted too.
In principle, in-memory technology has not changed the use of ALV lists, even the design of the lists remains unchanged. However, some of the functions provided behave slightly differently, or are not available.
The Change Layout icon in an ALV list that accesses an in-memory database is always displayed on the upper right border of the list.
Some new functions are only available for ALV lists in the in-memory database environment.
Grouping Functions
A grouping function is provided for lists that are filled from an in-memory database. It enables data in very large lists to be summarized quickly, and replaces the subtotaling function in other lists. For more information about grouping data, see Grouping and Deleting Groups
Faster Filter Function
As part of this new ALV an additional filter function is provided in the context menu, which complements the filter function in the lists toolbar. With this function a list can be filtered in a single step after a selecting a list element. For more information, see the section Setting and Deleting Filters.
In the following documentation, which introduces you to working with SAP List Viewer, you will always find a note whenever the use of an SAP List Viewer element varies because of the differences in the database technology.
