Change Logging Settings for Data ElementsLocate this document in the navigation structure

Use

Data elements can be logged via changed documents if they are connected up with the change document creation process. In transaction S_AUT10, you can determine whether or not a data element is logged via the change document creation facility.

If the Logging checkbox has been selected for the data element, the latter is logged via a change document. You can deactivate logging for the data element by unchecking the box.

You can invoke the function for setting up the logging of data elements either by selecting a certain table or directly via the desired data element.

Note

If no change document object exists for the selected table, the system issues an appropriate warning message. In such case, changing the logging settings for this data element has no effect. Use in non-registered change document objects constitutes an exception to this.

Caution

If you change the logging settings for a data element, this takes effect across the whole system on all table fields that are based on this data element.

When you save the changed setting, the system first creates an inactive version of the changed data element. Only when you activate the settings do you generate an active version of the changed logging setting.

Prerequisites
  • To be able to carry out the logging of a data element, the latter must be connected to the change document creation facility (see Creation of Change Documents).

  • You can only change the logging setting if the selected data element is not locked by another user or request.

Procedure

Find Data Element by Table:

  1. In Customizing for SAP NetWeaverStart of the navigation path Application Server Next navigation step Basis Services Next navigation step Audit Trail Next navigation step Changing the Configuration of Logging End of the navigation path, or call transaction S_AUT04 directly.

  2. In the list field above the object overview, choose the entry Table.

  3. Enter the technical name of the table and choose Continue.

The data elements of the table are displayed in the right-hand part of the screen.

  4. Select the desired data element and choose the Use in Change Document Objects pushbutton to determine the change document objects in which the data elements are used.

With the where-used list, the system determines which tables use the data element in question. However, it only checks those tables that are also assigned to a change document object. In the check with regard to change document objects, only registered change document objects are recorded, which means those that were created with transaction SCDO.

As a result of the check, the system lists the tables and table fields plus the change document object in which the selected data element is used.

    Note

Perform the where-used list function before each change to the logging setting to determine possible effects on other tables.

  5. Select one or more data elements whose logging setting you wish to change and choose the Change pushbutton.

  6. To log a data element, set the indicator in the Logging column.

  7. If appropriate, enter a comment in the text line of the data element.

  8. Choose Apply.

The Already Changed symbol appears next to the Table Fields column.

  9. Choose Save.

  10. Activate the object using the Mass Activation facility.

Call Up Data Element Directly:

  1. In the list field above the object overview, select the entry Data Element.

  2. In the text field underneath it, enter the technical name of the data element and choose Continue.

The data element is displayed in the right-hand part of the screen.

  3. In the following, proceed as described above as of step 2.

    Note

We recommend tha you generally search for data elements via the related table and avoid direct technical accessing if possible.

Result

The logging settings have been changed in line with your input. The Configuration Already Complete icon appears next to the changed object.

If later want to trace which changes were made to the logging settings for data elements, you can use transaction S_AUT10 to run an evaluation of table logs of the table UT_C_DTELLOG.
