You can display the application servers that are logged on to the SAP Message Server by executing transaction SM51, or by choosing   Administration   System Administration   Monitor   System Monitoring   Servers  . These are the instances of your SAP system. From their status, you can recognize which application servers are active in this SAP system.

You can also administer the application servers, and manage and display the status of the users and work processes in all application servers belonging to the SAP system.

Server Table

The application server display includes the following information:

  • Server Name: The name of each application server.

    The name usually consists of the host name, the SAP system name, and the SAP system number.

  • Host Name: Host name of each application server

  • Message Types: Services provided by the application server. This contains the configured SAP work process types (Dialog, update (Update and Upd2), Enqueue, Batch and Spool) as well as the following services:

    • ICM. This means that on the application server in question an Internet Communication Manager (ICM) is configured that can accept or send requests from the Internet (HTTP and other protocols).

    • J2EE: The Application Server Java is configured on this server. This means it is a server that can execute both ABAP and Java/J2EE programs.

    • VMC: The SAP Virtual Machine Container (VMC) is configured on this server, which means that there is a Java VM as well as an ABAP VM in the work process.

  • Server Status: An application server can have one of the following statuses:

    • initial

    • started

    • Active

    • Passive

    • shutdown

    • stop

You can add the following columns by changing the layout:

  • Service: Service port or service name under which the server can be reached.

  • Host Address (IPv4): IP address of the host in IPv4 notation

  • Host Address (IPv6): IP address of the host in IPv6 notation

  • Port: Port number

  • Port (hex) : Port number in hexadecimal form.

  • Shutdown Status: State within soft shutdown (if the state field has the value shutdown)

  • Shutdown Information: Further technical information about soft shutdown (for example error or timeouts) is the state field has the value shutdown

You can use your cursor to select an application server by clicking on the relevant line (except for the Refresh (Refresh) function). The function that is executed then refers to this server.

Authorizations

When the following functions are run, the user is logged on to the server (exception: Refresh) on which the function (or transaction) is called. The following requirements must be met:

  • You have authorization for the transaction in question

  • A valid dialog user logs on to the application server

Otherwise, an error message is displayed.

There are additional functions that you can only use via the menu:

  •   Goto   SAP Directories  

    The SAP directories for the selected server displays: The environment variables on the left, the path on the right, where the directory is physically located and its name. To display the contents of a directory, double-click that directory or click the Display button. You can also display the individual files here. For more information, see the CCMS documentation.

  •   Goto   Monitors   Gateway Monitor  

    You can also access the gateway monitor in transaction SMGW.

  •   Goto   Monitors   Gateway Monitor  

    You can also reach the ICM monitor using transaction SMICM. This is only relevant for servers that offer the ICM service (see above).

    The VM overview can also be reached via transaction SM52. This is only relevant for servers that offer the VMC (Virtual Machine Container) service (see above).

    The operating system monitor (OS monitor) delivers statistical information on the host platform of an SAP instance.

    Here you will find the administration functions (stop, (de)activate servers, test connection to message server, trace) that you can also find in the message server monitor (transaction SMMS).

    Here you can find the following information about the individual application servers:

    This displays the environment variables for the selected server.

    Communication table

    The communication table for the relevant application server is displayed.

    The RFC connections to the server on which the cursor is positioned are displayed.

    The connections are displayed where the local dispatcher of the client is located and those connections where the server is located. This means that the connections to the server that were made externally.

    Logon Data

    Logon data pertaining to the selected server.

    Trace Search

    You can specify a character string in accordance with which all dev_* trace files are searched. This provides an initial overview of the error search.

  •   Goto   ACL File  

    This function allows you to re-read or display the ACL file (Access Control List) for individual ports on the application server. If you have changed the ACL file, you can use this function to activate the changes without having to restart the application server.

    The following functions are available:

      SAP GUI Port   Display  

    Displays the ACL file that control access to the SAP GUI port on the selected application server. You can see which hosts are allowed to open SAP GUI connections to this server.

      SAP GUI Port   Re-Read  

    Re-reads the ACL file for the SAP GUI port on the selected application server.

    All Ports

    Re-reads the ACL files of all ports on the selected application server (SAP GUI Port, Gateway, ICM) .

    system-wide:

    Re-reads the ACL files of all ports on all application servers of the system.

  •   Goto   Host Name Buffer   Reset   <component>  

    This option lets you make the changes made in the OS hosts and services tables in a running SAP system take effect by making the desired changes at operating system level and then, instead of restarting, resetting the host name buffer for the following components:

    • Selected application server

    • Message server

    • Internet Communication Manager (ICM)

    • Entire system (all host name buffers)
